First time aircooled 911 queries

Hi all,

I’m looking at getting into air cooled porsches and have narrowed down my search abit to f series and g series. Only problem is i’ve never really gotten hands on with them or spoken to any owners.

So i was wondering if there are events happening soon or even any owners near to me (south bucks) who are down to let me bore them with questions!

For reference i currently have a 981c s so it’s quite a change.

+1 for DDK. Been on there for about 20 years, massive info on all old 911's.
I've had my '73T for 37 years now, and put a 3.2 in it in 1995.
The early engines are great but thirsty and the cars are full of 'raw' responses, soooo very different to a modern Porsche.
I also have a 987.2 Boxster so have some experience of the difference.

It is all about buying the best condition you can especially avoiding RUST, and if you can get a car independently checked -over.
Almost every part you will need is available which makes mechanical work very easy (they are simple cars)

Prices have dropped over the last 18 months, and some of the (good) dealers have some fabulous cars on sale.

I’ve been browsing DDK last night so thanks for the tip, i’d actually not thought about the MPG on the older models but it is definitely lower than the 3s and 3.2s. I would like to drive it as much as possible so that does mean something to me so thanks for the heads up.

and yeah i’ve heard doing a PPI before can save a lot in the long run with rust like you say but i am happy to put some work into an almost there car for sure.
 
My 911 above has had 3 engines in my time.
A 2.2 on webers, T spec, 120 bhp = 18 mpg. Bit slow as the car weighs 1000Kg.
Then came a hot 2.4 with 180 bhp and 12 mpg when driven hard, 18 'normal'. Fabulous engine on mechanical injection, you will find a lot of 911's with this system, so charismatic. But, 12 mpg of E5 starts to hurt on a nice weekend.
Then I put the 3.2 in the car in 1995, 230 bhp, tons of torque and on a good run, 32 mpg.

That is a better power to weight ratio than my 250 bhp Boxster which will give 36 driven the same way.

Another thing to bear in mind, these early 911's do not stop very well with stock brakes. (simple mods really help)
But you learn to concentrate!
These cars can take you on great adventures, and many are painted vivid '70's' colours, silvers and greys are rare thank goodness.

Very usual info thank you i think g series is probably where I’ll end up for cost and maybe some more “modern” components to start out in.

I’ve heard alot about brake upgrades and it seems to just come from later models? people don’t tend to use 3rd party setups maybe?

Colour wise guards red seems to be very common! and lots of convertibles and targas so trying to find anything other than that is quite tricky for sure!
 
Hey Max, happy to chat G-Models if you want ( I am just a few miles south of Daventry so probably a little far for a meet but maybe possible to catch at a National event if you are doing any ?)
