944 2.5 restoration project.

Well finished the service today, oil plug was very stuck took a lot of persuading but all done. The only thing left is the fuel filter which I presume is under the front tray as I can't see it for the life of me.
Found out the starting issues are a corroded dizzy cap on one of the points and the ht lead has seen better days as well.
Here is a couple of pics of the interior which I haven't touched yet apart from fitting the window and motor mech.

It's at the back of the car, by the fuel tank and the drivers side rear wheel. If it hasn't been changed in a while (should be every 4 years) then totally soak the unions in Plus Gas for a few days or it will be impossible to undo [&o]
 
Looks like you're going to have as much fun as me when it comes to cleaning up the interior seeing as you have the same coloured carpets.

Madrob6 thinking of spraying the carpets after cleaning unless they come up ok. Saw the idea on a parcel shelf.
If I can get a new interior in black for a decent price I will chop it over.

Any joy 944man? hope you had a good weekend I did spent it under the Porsche.
Fuel filter and pump was a right nightmare the nuts were rusted solid and I don't think they had been touched in years, had to cut them off in the end.

Mine were in a similar state, had to give them a long soaking in WD40 over a few days before they'd even think about undoing. I need to replace both rear sections of the hard fuel line and all of the flexible parts between the pump and the hard line. Will be going to see Pirtek at some point with regards to replacing the hard line with their flexible stuff so will give you an idea of price once I've been if you'd like.
 
Ok took some pics of the work i've done on the fuel filter and pump.
Fuel lines to the pump form the filter were a right state so tripped it all off and had a trip to Pirtek again.

Cut off the rusted nuts and replaced with nice new ones. Fuel pump bracket was held on by a cable tie and was missing the top part so i've stuck a mikalor clamp on until I find a cover.

Got the new ht leads today £60 ebay and a dizzy cap from Eurocar parts £19 should be in tomorrow, so will get them fitted tomorrow and give her a start after i've sorted the wiring.
Got two sets of wiring going to the pump both are pretty ropey so will have a look with my multi meter to see what the score is.



 
The fuel pump is only energised if the engine is turning (or at least thats what Porsche intended). Most immobilisers cut the power to the fuel pump though and many early cars have b*stardised wiring as a result. This is also why most cars now have the fuel pump running when the ignition is turned on.
 
Oh that explains the wiring then cheers, so if I connect the other wiring up I expect she'll only run when turning over.
 
Thats the theory... Whether it all works or not is another matter. The fuel pump wiring on 924s early 944s wasnt ever brilliant, so it mighnt all work properly even if its wired as Porsche intended. Ive had fuses and fuseboxes melt on some cars.
 
Got all the service items finished, checked spark seems ok not as fast as I imagined how fast do the spark plugs spark?
Wouldn't start though turns over but doesn't fire, had a look at the dme relay which look pretty new but i'm going to order a couple from ebay.
Did find this hanging down by the glove box.
What are these two plugs for and should they both have a relay plugged in them?

I've a square dash car and had a look and cant identify those plugs - are they part of the original loom?
What colours are the wires?

They did have a relay plugged into one of them the other was tucked up with nothing in it. They appear to be part of some bracket that has bits missing as there is another similar plug/coupler plugged into the centre console.
Wires are in the one loom
Red/Blue
Red
2xYellow/Black
Brown

Second coupler

I have a black 1983 944 i paid £450 for in about the same condition as yours, living in Chippenham.
The wiring in mine has been causing me grief, i think im getting there now tho. Try the connections on the rear of the dme, they have to be solid or it may not play ball, also the earth wires behind the glovebox,there is a lot of them together and if they are a bit corroded it will cause grief and the dme earth goes straight to it.Do your electric windows work? i think the wires hanging down may be the ones for the window relays.

Argh that help loads yep the pass side window has no wiring in the door so that makes sense.
Thanks for the advice on the wiring will look over the weekend.
Chippenham heh used to live in Calne spent many a night in Diggers but that another story for another thread.
 
Had a quick look with the meter today at my starting issues. Getting 11.7vdc to the injectors all looking ok one of the clips is gone will do a flow check tomorrow, but the coil secondary check is out of range should read somewhere between 5kohms and 7.2kohms but have no reading at all, the primary reading is spot on 5ohms.
Does that mean my coil is duffers? [:mad:]
I had planned to get a new coil and injectors but could of done with this next month.
 
Are you getting a spark? i don't know much about coils, but if you have a spark it may be elsewhere. Have you had a look at clarks garage website? it is excellent, lots of advice and plenty of diagrams. There is a part in there about testing the fuel flow, i can't remember all of it, but you have to take off the nut on the end of the fuel rail and attach a length of hose to it and put this into a clear container to check. You have to fit a jumper wire to the rear of the dme but i can't recall which connections.

Diggers eh? thats a blast from the past!

how easy was it changing the fuel pump? i think i may need to do mine!
