Can some helpful person explain the difference between S2 and other 944 struts. Are the mounting points different?

thanks guys

Stephen

I think all the oval dash on cars have similar struts as they have wider, alloy wishbones as opposed to narrower steel wishbones on the early cars. Top mounts are the same but the lower ones are different.
The M030 options are different again.

Spring perches on S2 struts will have a lower diameter since S2 springs have a smaller diameter than turbo springs.

In that case is there any reason you cant use stuts springs and top mounts for a 89 944 turbo or even 2.7 lux on a S2

I ask as my car had a steering judder thats been there for a few weeks, finally got round to sticking it on my mates 2 post lift to find the fron tyres well buggered on the inside, I am appalled at myself as I am usually very particular about my tyres, near side tyre inside edge 15 mm had no rubber never mind tread

The out side 1/3 looked close to new (tyres about 5k old) nearside worse but off side similar

On checking the rest the struts had play in them so decided to replace both struts.

Now you can get bilstein inserts as you will all know for some models but the S2 is different, £118 for an insert but £259 for the S2 OME strut, bummer, They arrived monday but mate phoned to say when doing the swap nearside has larger diameter spring so therefore different strut

So another £159 later 2 genuine Porsche springs on there way from local dealer

including tyres bill will be £1000 for standard springs and struts reckon could have got better for similar money Must be a way to use the bilstein insets.

booked in for 4 wheel alignment as soon as on 4 wheels, looing forward to hear what they say

Thanks for help guys

You can get an insert from Koni that fits into the S2 shock after you cut off the existing piston.

Best price always used to be from www.motorsportworld.co.uk currently £125 each

Sorry my previous post was a bit cryptic.

There are three diameters of strut springs on our cars :
- 944 NA, 944 turbo 220 springs (non-M030)
- 944 S2/968, 944 turbo 1990/91 springs
- M030 springs (944, 968) with variable diameter from top to bottom.

'89 turbo springs mean M030 as all '89 turbos came with M030.
Top mounts are interchangeable regardless of strut spring diameter.
You will be able to carry over M030 springs and top perches from the '89 turbo only if the lower spring perches on your S2 spring struts have the same diameter as the bottom diameter of the M030 strut springs.
I only have first hand experience with S2/968 springs and NA/turbo springs but not with M030 springs and I ignore if the bottom diameter of M030 springs are closer to NA/turbo spring diameter or S2/968 spring diameter.

Now this has given a headache, where's my tube of aspirin...

Has anyone got a nearside S2 Strut casing (one with knackerd insert) they would be willing to part with?

Got two new bodge struts on but as is my way would like a slight improvment so want to use my old casings to put new inserts into. As previously stated my nearside strut is the wrong one, being the wide spring pan type.

Not got the car back yet as the local Porsche dealer (110 mile away) sent the wrong spring top cap, bit disapointing and more money as have had to hire a car for a few days

nothing is ever simple lol
