As we're all discussing tyres.... !

Quick one on the tyre front.

I've got two set of wheels at the moment, one CS with some very old scabby Goodyear F1's on and a set of D90's cobbled together from various sources.

My plan is to move full time to the D90's for both road (limited) and track days (most of the mileage) because of the potential breakage issues with CS's and don't want/can't afford to have them refurbed. They also look so scabby that they detract from the car's image.

The issue as always with 944's and many German RWD cars is the different off-set/ width front vs back.

This has implications for carrying a useable (ie at full speed.... not 50mph....) wheel, meaning that I'm loathed to go any distant (particularly the Ring or Spa) without useable bolt on wheels, not cans of foam or spare tyres etc.

So my plan is to run with D90's 7j front and 8J back. The tyres at present are 205/55 and 225/50 both on 16".

Long ramble, but:

1. Will fit 225's on a 7" rim ?
2. If yes to 1. how does this affect the handling ie tyre squirm and overhang etc.... ?
3. If no to 1. what's the widest you can go to on a 7" rim maybe 215/50 ?
4. Will an 8J rear D90 fit the front of 951 with medium blacks ? That way I could buy another rear D90 as fully working useable spare for both front and rear

Thanks for your thoughts,

Chris

225 on a 8J rim the standard tyre fitment for the rear of an S2. I swapped the fronts and backs on mine (to diagnose a wheel wobble) and had no clearance problems. Not sure on handling though as I didn't drive it hard for fear of unpredictable oversteer (I had 205s on the rear!).

Have a look here for a downloadable excel tyre calculator thing (in the 1st post) -

I think you should be able to work that one out for yourself, seeing as you own both the wheel and a suitable car/hub/brake assembly to offer it up to [;)]

Yeah thanks for that Ed......

Very difficult to do when the car is 80miles away........

Oh and I'm unlikely to get the car back for several weeks, oh and at the risk of protesting tooo much, I don't have tyre fitting bay in my garage to swap tyres around....[:'(]

1. Yes. According to this calculator 225/50/16s fit on wheels 6"-8.5" wide http://www.1010tires.com/TireSizeCalculator.asp

2. Equal size tyres all round on a 944 are supposed to dial out the inherant understeer that many complain of. Indeed lots of the racers used to use 245 all round

3. See no 1

4. Yes

Paul and 944man

thanks you both for your prompt and helpful responses, this knowledge is very useful for my trip planning and tyre arrangements - much appreciated.

I think based on this, I'll do some tyre swapping and hopefully end up with 225's on D90's all round with an 8" 225 D90 as spare for both ends !

Will keep you posted !

Chris
