Back from my annual Nurburgring trip

You may recall last year's adventure with my 944 turbo and its' broken suspension....This year's trip was a little different. [:(]

It's a bit of a long story...

Bit of a long post - Last weekend I went on my annual 'ring trip. Only 9 of us this time, 5 cars - 944 turbo (ChrisG), S2000, 330Ci, track prepped 328 and my Civic race car

It starts early last Thursday morning . There had been a distinct lack of last minute panic up to that point.....although I had a vague concern about a little play in the gearbox bearing that supports the o/s driveshaft. Just after M1 J21, we both noticed a vibration through the car - must be the road surface mustn't it? It got worse & we pulled off at J20 to have a look. The o/s innner CV seemed to have got a fair bit worse, so we figured this was the cause of our problems. This meant either a complete gearbox stripdown to fit the new bearing, or a new box.We decided to try & limp the car home & explore our options. the knocking got worse, and we were barely managing 40 in the inside lane, so decided to pull over at Leicester Forest East and get recovered.

By the time we got back we had decided a new box was the best and easiest option. My passenger Simon (luckily he'd worked in a garage for 8 years..) set about removing the box while I tried to source a replacement. We worked out a timetable that meant if I could source one before 11 we still had a chance of getting to the 'ring for Friday afternoon's sessions. By 10.30 I had found a good box, so we were back in with a chance...

I arrived back just before 2 and Simon went back to work on the new box. I went out to pick up the essentials like gear oil, coolant and rizlas (for Simon). By 5 everything was done, we had a Calais hotel booked, and a tunnel crossing amended. Unfortunately the road test revealed the problem had not been fully sorted. By this time I really thought the trip was off, and I was making arrangements to drive Simon down to Chris's so at least he could still get there. But he was undaunted, and yet again managed to fix the problem. The n/s inner CV was the culprit, and when we pulled it a apart, one of the bearings was competely shot. Luckily I had a spare set of s/h driveshafts that had come with the car, and we managed to transfer the bearings over. (when I say "we" of course that means Simon was doing the work and I was passing the tools and providing moral support. At 6.30 we were on our way, fuelled with sausage sandwiches and a mixture of optimism and relief. The car behaved beautifully, and by 12.50 we were in the bar at the hotel in Calais downing a cold beer. We had been very lucky in many ways - the car had failed just a few miles away from home, and I had a passenger with the right skills to fix it. What was more surprising was that it failed on the M1, after standing up to being thrashed round Outon and Cadwell.

The trip to Nurburg was completely uneventful. The car is surprisingly comfortable. The passenger is very snug though, but we got it relatively comfortable in the end. We were on the 'ring for our first lap by 4'ish. Did I take it very carefully on my first lap? not really :) . The car was fantastic on the 'ring, grippy, neutral and pretty fast.

I was out at 8 for the opening of the track on Saturday - weather fine, track clear. This was the pattern for most of the weekend. I got in one very pleasing lap where it felt like I was almost the only person on the circuit - I passed 5 cars all lap, and nothing came past.

In fact, apart from the longer straights, not much caught the Civic. Once they were rolling, the GT3's and the CSL's went past me pretty quick up Kesselschen, down Flugplatz and SX. It wouldn't pull very quickly in top, feeling quite flat after the manic noise & speed of 3rd & 4th. Fastest I was going was 7200rpm in 5th over the brow before SX, which worked out on GPS to approx. 125mph. Apart from that I am sure the car would be very quick with a braver, more experienced driver. The low weight and high grip meant I didn't need a lot of brakes - for example quite happy with a quick dab after the jump at pflantzgarten.

I didn't time any laps, but a mate in the 328 was timed at 8.36 BTG, and I was very close to his pace - my car is a little faster but he has a bit more track knowledge, so somewhere in the high 8.40's I guess. I realised by the end of the weekend that my driving mode had changed from last year from being a considerate slower car, keeping a good look in the mirrors and getting out of the way, to being a considerate overtaker, giving the bikes and cars plenty of room.

- bonnet pin a bit loose in this pic - must photoshop it [;)]

The rest is pretty straightforward - easy journey home, until the M1 that is, and can't wait until next year. It sounds great on the track as well:D

That sounds great, looks like you a good time. That 3rd pic looks amazing!

I am insanely jealous and I wish I could afford to do something like that! The girlfriend has decided we are going on holiday to Mexico in October though so thats me skint til then!

Wow, what an adventure. Love the Apollo 13 spirit in keeping the old girl going and finishing your trip. Well done.

Well done, i would have given it up as a "bad job" when the G Box gave up so near to travelling.

Sounds like a fantastic trip, and with something cheap light and relatively low powered sounds like an ideal thrash machine. Edh are you finding you are enjoying it more in the civic knowing that you can give it a good thrashing?

The drama reminds of an incident a long time ago on a trip of to Amsterdam with a mate, he stuffed it into the central reservation barriers on the A14. The radiator wasn't leaking and the lights still worked so my advice was to carry on, which we did [8D]

Shame you didn't get any footage, I always like watching CRX, Civic video's on track because the manic engine note and lack of braking make every lap look and feel 10/10ths pace[:)] Great story, very jealous!

Great photos, great story. Well done (to Simon!) for pulling the trip back from the brink of failure ...

Looking at those piccies I am very jealous. Very jealous indeed. I've never been to the 'ring and would love to go. Would there be any interest in a 944 trip for some of the regulars on here?

The car is a fantastic compromise - civilised enough to drive 500 miles, but completely at home on the track, as you might expect from a well developed race car with ~15 years in competition. It is soft enough to drive on the road - not much worse than a standard integra DC2, but beautifully balanced on the track - just a hint of oversteer if you go in a bit quick.

To be quite honest I think I drove my 944 turbo as hard, but whether I would be as enthusiastic with a GT3RS will always remain a hypothetical question [;)]. The difference with the 944T is I know the bills will be lower on this car, whatever happens. For example I can pick up a good, non-rusty, wing for £10-£20. A048's all round were £340 fitted, and a B16 engine is peanuts (my gearbox cost me £80 [:D]) although a bigger engine cold be a bit more. I am a little tempted to do some gearbox work - shorter final drive & LSD would make the car perfect, but it's a lot of money (probably £1,000+) to spend for a little extra speed, when the car is already so good. I could also take out 50-70 kilos, but that would probably make the car much noisier and ruin it as a 'ring car.

On one lap I was followed by a very nicely driven 968 - he stayed with me until about half way - the long uphill drag from Bergwerk to Steilstrecke. His extra power was evident over 100mph and he gradually caught me. I backed off & let him through at Mutkurve. There really wasn't much in it apart from that, which shows you the sort of pace the car is capable of.

Anyone booking Silverstone evenings? - I want to come & play... [:D]

Jochen is a great photographer. - pics 2 & 3 are the same corner - Weirseifen

We usually go out once a year in May, and the weather has always been glorious. Be warned - I don't think many people only go once [;)] I also think it's a good idea to get some UK track driving done first, although places like silverstone bear almost no resemblence to 90% of the nordschleife.

I love that downhill pic, that is worthy of being put on a massive canvas above the fireplace, what stunning scenery and weather..!

Great pics! I'm pondering a trip to the ring this summer but have been put off by insurance issues (my policy doesn't cover 'unrestricted toll roads' and i've read all the horror stories on the net) i've not found anything on the net other than £250 a day track insurance. Interested to know what you do about cover?

I am insured - I definitely wouldn't go without. Trackday insurance does not cover you for TF days, and has no third party cover, which is what you most need.

There are still some insurers that don't exclude the 'ring, and a few who will explicitly cover it for TF days. Your other option is an ATDO operator running a trackday there - destination nurburgring and bookatrack are there this summer.

pm or email me and I'll give you some details on my insurer.

Hi Mate, u had some good laps then, i am going to the ring this Aug, as u have been lots of times what would u say is the best way to go ? also as u seem a bit of a wissss round an engine, my 91 944s2 gear stick is may be a bit spongy. i have heard there is an up grade stick on the market that sorts that out ? do u know any thing about that.

PS the ring trip leaving via m20 to Dover

There are a few people that can do this. These guys have probably been doing them longest and have an excellent product:

I'm off to the Ring in July after doing the scallyrally Millie Miglia banger rally in the 944 lux i'm restoring, could you point me in the direction of your insurance and any other advice you could think of would be super pm if you like.
Pics look great sure does look fun can't wait to go myself.

Whats your power to weight? Binning the extra weight you suggest is worth around 12 bhp.

Can you please PM me the insurer you use, thanks, as my Mk 1 Golf is nearly back on the road having had a suspension and engine transplant/upgrade [;)]

I don't think power to weight is so important over 100mph - look at how Caterhams struggle at those speeds unless they have very powerful engines. I believe it's more about absolute power - and that drag rather than weight is your biggest factor.

As I said above, weight loss could make the car a lot noisier, which would make the 1000+ mile round trip much harder. For a UK only car it's a no-brainer, but for now the glass, carpets, headlining etc.. stays in.

Advice...

1. It's a very scary and dangerous place, and you will be sharing the track with people who are twice as quick as you. Most of your first 10-20 laps will be spent looking in the mirrors & wondering where the heck the track goes next! UK trackday rules don't apply, but German traffic laws do. If you turn in on a car who is overtaking you through a LH bend, it's your fault.

2. Insurance - if you don't have any, don't go out. It's not so much the damage to your car, or complete write-off, it's not even armco or closure costs, it's more the potential for huge bills for the GT3RS you crashed into, or the biker who fell off on your fluids & is now maimed / crippled for life. Imagine coming back & telling your wife you need to sell the house & everything you own, just to pay those bills. It happens.

3. Playstations and other sims have very little value and don't give you any idea of the gradients & forces involved. There's a pic on northloop of an RSR Clio that went into the trees last weekend. Young lad, first ever lap, " I got the jump wrong after fuchsrohre" [8|] There is no "jump" - and the corner is 100+ mph (130-140 in a fast car)

4, Timing - don't! Don't try to beat 10 mins because that's the best way to crash. Until you know where you are going you will be slow. Don't be embarrassed by people passing you in vw polos - they know the circuit and you don't.

5. Maybe rental is a good bet - expensive, and with fairly hefty excesses, but still a very good way to deal with the lack of insurance.

6. There is no run-off at the 'ring - Ok maybe 3 or 4 corners with gravel traps, and one (Adenauer Forst) where lots of people go across the grass without being in danger of crashing. The rest of the time there's a thin strip of grass & then armco. Get some UK track time first and get some experience of how your car works at speed, and what happens when it goes a bit wrong. You will never (should never) approach those sorts of cornering speeds on a public road. Understand how to drive round a bend. I thought I could drive until I did some track driving - now i realise what little talent I have.

Disclaimer
I don't claim any special knowledge here. I'm not a "ring-meister", just a moderate UK trackday driver with a few 'ring laps under my belt. You'll see stuff like this posted on most 'ring forums. It's still the most incredible race track (sorry, one way toll road ) I have ever driven on.
