Belts advice

Interested in a car (944 S2) that had belts changed 3 years ago (only 2K in miles), I'm assuming I should budget changing them for peace of mind if I purchase.

Next service, yes. Four years max.

If everthing else checks out, I'd not worry about the extra cost. At least you've got peace of mind that it's been done and you can have four years without worrying.

Is a figure of £300 a reasonable amount to budget.
Only other thing that may concern me is lack of use over last 3 years.[&:]

Just looked at my indie's menu pricing, and it's £500-ish. Not including anything like seals, and add the waterpump if it's needed. I thought it was about £300 last time I had belts only. []

At TWG in Peterborough belts only is £300, but I spent £500 recently to have the waterpump and belts done together

Cheers guys, I've made contact with a mechanic who will have a look over the car for me.
944 ownership could be close !!!!!![:D]

I dont think that it is technically listed as a servicable item by Porsche.. But many get it changed as it is a weak point and a break would be lights out for the engine.

Other S2 oweners will be able to give you an idea as to the un-offical interval - personally I would say check and possibly replace every second belt change - but that may be a little OTT.

Whats the interval on the chain etc.??

There isn't one, but generally it's worth at least checking when you get the belt done. The plastic slippers will be either new, or need doing as they go brittle with age. As always, there's the chance that you might need rollers or oil seals as well, and get the waterpump checked.

Sounds a lot, but you would be very unlucky to need everything and even then you'd be set for many years without having to worry about it.

I've had my chain changed every 50,000 miles and they have always said everything looks in good condition - minimal stretch and no damage to the sprockets. About to change it for the 3rd time this summer and hope it will be the same report

You have got to remember a worn cam chain will accelerate wear on your cam sprockets. Better with a £30 chain rather than £1000 for a pair of cams!!
