Bike rack?

Has anybody successfully fitted a bike rack to their 944? I'm thinking it would have to be one of the ones which goes on the rear hatch. I can get one bike in the car with the seats down (after some dismantling!) but 2 isn't really possible.

I thought of making something which mounts under the car, similar to the ones which fit the towbar but there aren't really any good mounting points underneath.

The safest way, in my opinion, would be to fit a towbar and use a proper rack although this might be a bit pricey. Towbar cost approximately £200.

Where does the towbar mount on a 944? Is this a factory option or an aftermarket kit from Witter or similar?

Aftermarket kit at

Porsche used to sell a ski rack to fit the 944 roof. I should think it would not be too difficult to modify a Thule to fit the rear hatch or roof.
The rear two mount points were obviously under the rear hatch hinges but the front two I believe were either across the roof to the door openings or possibly into the sun-roof opening.?
There is a picture somewhere as this discussion came up on Rennlist a while back

I think you need one of these with a cycle section on top[;)]

Correct and correct young man,

Came from a nice Aussie living in Ireland managed to find it through this site Got two sea kayaks, no moving parts but cost me more to buy than the S2

fantastic! my dream currently is to try sea kayaking round the South West coast . I need to lose a couple of stone first though
I never thought it could be possible to carry one on a 944 but your picture has changed that .Thanks for posting it

I can get both my sea kayaks on the roof and all the gear for 2 plus camping gear in the back, one of the reasons I love my 44.

Off topic but if you enjoy kayaking try loads of diffirent boats, mine came from a company near southhapton called Mega, built to order of a kevlar carbonfibre mix very light but strong and much less exspensive than you might believe[:D]

I do fancy a towbar though as well but cant work out if you can fit one to an S2 without cutting the undertray!

Funny. There seems to be an overlap between 944 owners and paddlers - observed on PH, and now on here.

I'm an ex-paddler. Still own a boat (three actually!) but haven't paddled them for a long while. Like, 10 years. And yes, I'd do well to lose some weight before setting foot in one again ...

I was more of a whitewater junkie myself. Never tried sea kayaking. Perhaps I should - could be a way back in ...

Adrenalin junkies must like 944's pound for grins one of the best buys ever and that incudes my Strat replica
Got a Neky Bliss river boat as well but dont enjoy getting cold and wet - too old for that[:D]

maybe we should start a paddling thread and see how many of us might be interested in a meet up and sea paddle.? Weymouth has an excellent centre for the SW . I think its the Weymouth centre that publishes the new Sea kayaking mag the name of which escapes me .?
maybe we could do a round Britain relay ?

The person I bought my first 944 Towbar from had used it for towing a caravan with his 944 Turbo, in Iceland!
