Camber bushes and steering shaft

I had an advisory on the last service for play in the universal joints of the steering shaft of my S2 so I ordered one today. I'm also going to change over to 968 style camber bushes and I've ordered some new steering rack rubber mounts too.

I can't see anything on Clarks garage about how to do any of these jobs, does anyone have a link to something or any tips of what to look out for? I'm going to get a full alignment check done soon but is there much adjustment when I swap the bushes?


 
968 camber bushes are easy - a search on here will give you more detail, but you simply unbolt the old ones and bolt on the new ones.

Can't help with the steering shaft - sorry.

Thanks, the steering shaft looks ok, does anyone know whether I need to move the rack significantly (and drop the PAS fluid) to get at the bushes / shaft?

Also, does anyone know anywhere to get the geometry done in the Hull / Leeds area?
 
Hi,

Ref. the steering shaft, it's actually a lot more straight forward than it looks. First step, remove the two heat shields at the top and bottom of the shaft. Both are held on by 10mm nuts, the top one can be fidly as it sits next to the exhaust and underneath the clutch master cylinder - top trick, maks sure the engine is cold....

The bottom one is bolted straight into the main engine cross member - be careful not to strip the threads when removing or replacing.

Next, undo the 13mm pinch bolts that hold the shaft onto the splines at either end. These bolts have eccentric nuts that are 'oval' and act as lock nuts but without the nylon that would melt with the heat.

You should now find that the shaft will move on the splines.

The only movement you can get for the shaft is at the bottom end as the stub from the steering wheel is fixed.

So, next step, undo the 10mm nut that holds the pipe going to the power steering pump cooling 'loop' actually square which is underneath the right hand or drivers side chassis rail. This then allows you 'play' or movement with the steering rack.

So, to loosen the steering rack, there are 4 x 13mm bolts that hold the steering rack to the front cross-member - these are all slightly different lengths so don' mix them up.

You might find it easier to undo the track rod ends from the hubs/ uprights using a ball joint splitter, although ISTR u can leave them attached.

You should now have enough play and movement with the steering rack to wriggle the shaft free from the splines at both ends. If the shaft has been on the car since it left the factory, you may need to 'assist' the removal with some gentle taps.

Don't be afraid to get quite brutal with it.

Fittin the shaft is the same process in reverse, its worth cleaning up the splines with a wire brush at both ends and applying a little grease to help the shaft back on.

Chris, that's amazing, thanks. Exactly what I needed. Assuming I have all the parts in time then I'll have a crack at this on Sunday. This is my only car so I have to be a bit careful when planning what I'm going to do - never ending up with an undrivable car at the end of the day!

I don't seem to have the top heatshield fitted on my car (just been out to check and the only heatshield in that area is under the exhaust, around the inner wing chassis rail. I can't see if the bottom one is there as it's too dark to see. Certainly nothing between the clutch MC and the exhaust.
 
Good luck with the install - just to let you know (and to be pedantic) they're generally called Caster Mounts or Caster Bushes, not Camber bushes!

Haven't done the Steering Shaft myself, but the Caster Mounts are just a case of unscrewing the two bolts which go up into the floorpan and the nut which is in the middle of the bush, sliding the old Caster Mount out, put the new one in and refit the nut and the bolts to where they were before.

IIRC, the workshop manual (which I don't have on this computer, so can't check) recommends that you use new bolts on the Caster mount when refitting.
 
I got the same advisory during my service - I mentioned it to Kev at EMC and he said they pretty much all have a little play in them - even the new ones! So its not something to worry about too much, I've got mine in the garage still waiting to be fitted though... [:D]
 
Castor bushes, that makes more sense [:D] Certainly either is easier than "front lower arm rear suspension bushes"!

I think mine is certainly past it's best, I can feel some pllay with a wheel off the floor and I'm sure the steering isn't as precise as when I got the car 2 years ago. I think the combination of castor mounts, the steering shaft, rack mounts and a geo check will sort me out. I won't really know which has made the difference but never mind [;)]
 
I got a steering shaft recently from OPC Bristol for about 90 inc vat. How much were your 968 camber mounts awattam.
 
I seem to remember pricing up the Steering shaft and there wasn't much in it between the OPC and Berlyn Services so I went for the later given I needed other bits as well - reckon it was ~ £85 all in but that was a few years ago.

I made the mistake of trying to change my engine mounts without taking the steering shaft off....

I then ended up with a steering system that had a flumpf or knot in it at half lock

Gosh, is that what a marshmellow looks like?

The shaft was £75 +VAT from Leeds OPC. The steering rack rubber mounts were £6.xx +VAT from the same. I paid £70 +VAT for the castor bushes from Hartech.

Sounds like those are typical prices compared with what people have said above. Just booked in for a full geometry check / adjust and have been quoted around £40 for that. All in it should be under £250 and I'm expecting a decent improvement in the handling.

Does anyone have a list of 'standard' suspension geometry settings for the S2? The place I'm going has a good reputation but I'd like to make sure they're using the correct numbers [;)]
