Camshaft cover removal S2 ??

foggy

New member
Ok about to start on a under-bonnet tidy up & first job is to sort the manky camshaft cover.

Is this a simple job?? Can't find any manual which covers this on a S2 so would appreciate any pointers.

Thanks

It is a simple job that should depend on how the bolts are willing to come out.
When I did that last year some needed tapping with a little hammer to get unblocked.
They may bend if hitting too hard because they are very thin, I think the tightening torque is no more than 20N.m

Take care when removing the screws for the clips which hold down the HT leads. These seem to snap very often. I have one snapped on mine and have seen a couple of others with the same problem.

(No major issue if it does snap, just that the clip flaps around a little and looks untidy.)

Oh, and it can be a game to wiggle the cover out from under the fuel supply hoses. But it will come out - just keep trying.

Hi,

This is something I need to do as well. Do you need some new gaskets when you reinstall?

No. Old ones are rubber and should survive re-use.

Oooo... at the risk of disagreeing with our local S2 authority Lord Oli von S2-stein I would recommend replacing the gaskets! [:)]

I didn't replace the seals for the two little plastic caps the first one I removed the cover and it didn't take long before they started to sweat oil.

I've never had much of a problem with re-using rubber rocker cover gaskets. It does help if you wipe them down carefully before re-seating, but I've had mine off two or three times and they leak no more now than they did 4 years ago when I bought it!

Other people's experiences may differ tho.

Garlic eating fame?

That's not good for rust at all. (And anyway, everyone knows that 944's rust along the sills, not in the engines ... )

Of course, that only applies to turbo's and S2 's. Everyone knows that Lux's and S's (particularly [;)] ) don't suffer from this - due to the lack of plastic c*rap along the bottom of the sills [:D]
