CAR Magazine - Z4 M Coupe vs. Cayman S vs. 350Z GT-S

This one is for Richard Heeley to try and convince him to stay with a Cayman S once he gets rid of his current one that has a PASM problem!

The November 2006 issue of CAR Magazine has a head-to-head between the BMW Z4 M Coupe, the Porsche Cayman S and a special one-off Nissan 350Z GT-S

Some basic facts and figures:

BMW Z4 M Coupe: 338bhp, 296lb ft, 5.0sec 0-60, 155mph top speed (limited)
Porsche Cayman S: 291bhp, 251lb ft, 5.4sec 0-60, 171mph top speed (claimed)
Nissan 350Z GT-S: 378bhp, 313lb ft, 4.8sec 0-60, 155mph top speed (limited)

So, as you can see, the Porsche Cayman S gives away a huge amount of power and torque to the BMW and Nissan. The road tests were carried out at Spa-Francorchamps.

Lap test times were recorded at Bedford Autodrome and were as follows:

1. Porsche Cayman S: 1.26.85
2. 350Z GT-S Concept: 1.26.95
3. Z4 M Coupe: 1.27.10

The Cayman S got the nod! Hurrah!

Here's a quote from the review (CAR Magazine, November 2006, page 109):

"That's why, despite the best efforts of two undeniably entertaining challengers, it's the Cayman that gets the nod. With greater poise than the M Coupe and more delicacy than the 350Z, its chassis is a more satisfying partner, while its smooth, cultured flat six spins and sings sweeter than either the bruising but brittle BMW straight-six or the heavy-breathing Nissan V6.

Factor-in better brakes, the slickest gearshift and the least intrusive, most effective electronic stability system, and the slight lack of straight-line fireworks seems less of a problem.

Many of you will groan at this point, feeling that the Cayman is the obvious choice. You're right, it is, but that's because, like its big brother, the 911, the Cayman sets the class benchmark, achieving a rare balance of character and competence its rivals simply can't match."
