MOT has failed all 4 tyres ! two of which were only 1 year old
Why, were they damaged? [
I fitted real budget tyres to a car once. They were so hopeless in the wet that I went back and bought some proper ones. A real false economy, at a time when I was in no position to buy another set or I'd not have gone for the cheap ones!
Bear in mind that used ones might be old (and could fail MOT) or damaged, and you'll still have to pay fitting. When a new set of a well-recommended brand are so reasonable for the type of car, I'd not skimp on such a critical bit. You wouldn't put used oil in the engine, or fit a used cambelt, but the tyres are keeping you on the road and alive.

Red cheers a good source unfortunately no 255x40x17 Kumho's in stock anywhere in the Country at the moment Falken 912 a possibilityORIGINAL: GeoffB
Check pistonheads.com might be able to pick up used wheels and tyres very cheap
Geoff thanks I'll take a look.
David thanks but a brand new set of Kumho or Falken are the same price and I can't even afford them at the moment.
Paul thanks for the lecture but I need Cheap tyres not advice [
Yes, there may be a large saving to be made. But it's a big 'ol gamble, and a gamble with things which are quite precious.

ETA: Sorry, I appreciate that I have just added to the lecture ...

good advice Oli but circumstances do not give an option at the momentORIGINAL: zcacogp
Sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud, but I'd echo McNulter's sentiments. Cheap tyres are cheap for a reason, and a false economy. And used tyres are potentially a problem waiting to happen. You know nothing of their history and they are a critical part of the safety of the car. I know that it's illegal to sell second-hand tyres in a lot of countries (Germany and the Netherlands for example, which is where a lot of the UK-sold second-hand tyres come from), and such rules exist for a reason.

Thanks for the well wishes . I'f I can get the car through the MOT re-test in 8 days it will give me a month or so to find some money for better tyres.
At least I'll have a car I can take my Father to the Hospital and clinics. Its no fun being stuck in the country without transport.

Part worns on ebay are beyond belief. Some of them have barely 1mm of tread left ?
I'm 100+ miles from Exeter or Bristol and miles from anywhere with no car so its very difficult to see a solution at the moment.
If I could borrow /loan some tyres for the re-test at least it would give me a little breathing space which is why i'm reluctantly considering part worns.
Mmmm how's the weather in Scotland at the moment ? ..........[
OK. Apology not necessary but accepted anyway - thanks! [
Loan of a set of wheels would be a good way forwards, by the sounds of it. Surely someone on here has a spare set of wheels with some tyres which they swap over for trackdays, or something? Or an old set of D90's which they no longer use 'cos they bought some spangly new wheels of some kind?
I have a spare set of 16inch front tyres from D90's if they are any help to you. But they aren't of the size you mention. [
What about Sulzeruk - Alasdair? He breaks 944's - I'm sure he will have several sets of legal wheels and tyres around. And his prices are much more reasonable than most official 'breakers'. And he may loan you a set for the MOT (although he is in Scotland as well.)
(As an odd-ball suggestion, what other stud patterns would fit a 944? Would a knackered old set of wheels from an Audi of the same era work, for instance? They'd be cheap, but the offsets would probably be way out meaning it would drive like a dog. But they'd only be for the MOT, so no big deal.)

There is a guy that has a S2 cab about 5 miles from me. I've never met him and its a helluva an ask but I might have to practise begging on both knees [
I'm not that far away from you when in Dorset (Shaftesbury) and whilst I don't have a spare set, I do have four axle stands! My tyres are reasonable on D90s.
My problem is that I work in London most of the week, how-ever, over the next couple of weeks I have a few days when I am in Dorset.
Tref.
Go slightly carefully - I *think* the PCD on the audi's may be different, but it's certainly worth an ask.
Do you have a local indie whom you are on good terms with? They may have a spare set of wheels 'round the back which they could lend you ... but then I think you are usually pretty hot on your DIY maintenance so probably don't have much contact with indies. Or, if you really want to try your luck, try getting chummy with someone in the working area of your local OPC. Not the bits of stuff on the front desk, the guys with grease on their hands ...
Other options - are you a member of TiPEC or PCGB? Ask your regional organiser chap whether he knows anyone locally who may have a spare set of wheels.

Hi Tref thats a mighty generous offer thank you.
My MOT was Monday this week so I have exactly 10 days to re-present the car or I'll have to have a complete new MOT .
I have to be a little careful using the car at the moment as the cars tax ran out on the 1st of June.
I have a couple of ideas to look at at the moment . I can afford to buy two new tyres which my local tyres shop have in stock.
So I may buy two new tyres and borrow two tyres or wheels and tyres. ? also i could look at other possible tyre sizes that would fit the rear rims for a temporary solution.
May I take a rain -check for the moment and thanks once again for your kind offer.
Having said this I can't garuntee it, and I know that the powers that be are getting hotter on this sort of stuff.
Oli.
Re the tax, you are legally able to drive to an from a pre-booked MOT without tax, and I should be able to come over to you or there abouts with the tyres... the only cost will be you have to listen to me preach the benefits of PCGB membership.
Of course, you could try as Oli suggested and contact the local PCGB RO... er that'll be me then[

Whereabouts and when are the local meets ? they used to be at Blandford which was a bit of a trek for me .
Of course, this Sunday is the Dorset Regional Concour. To give a taster, this year we have a class open to non members... prize for this is a years membership. Entry to the event (including entrance to Lulworth Castle) is £5 per car (yes, if you can get sixteen people in a 944, that is fine!). So, this year, all are well and truely welcome (with a porsche at least).
OK, I think that is as far as I can push the off-topic sales pitch! See you all there around 10.30am... Lulworth Castle, This Sunday, [
