Dipped headlight - numpty question

Can someone verify my understanding with a basic question , Am I correct in the assumption that the dipped headlights work from the side lights, rectangular lights in bumper, if the headlights are down and work from the main headlights when they are up.

Reason I am asking is that the dipped headlights have stopped working from the side lights and its obviously a bit annoying during the day, when you are trying to signal someone out and they can't see any signal from me. Additionally, the blue light at the top of the 3 dials, old style dash has stopped illuminating too, the blue light in the dial is still working when the headlights are up and I give someone a flash [8|]

So, are they on a seperate circuit, ie seperate fuse, to the dipped headlights in the pop up lights, which still work, or are they on the same circuit? I haven't checked the bulbs yet.

I just need to get it fixed quickly and easily since she's become my daily runner during this fabulous weather we're having.

Thanks
Spence

I think it is the same for square dash mate but the bumper lights should only be for sidelights and main beam. Dipped beam should only come on when the headlights pop up as that is where the dipped beam bulb is. There is also a full beam bulb in the pop ups as well as the bumper units. When you flash someone with the indicator stalk only the full beams in the bumper units come on and the beam indicator on the instruiment binnacle should also flash. I imagine the beam circuit works seperately through the stalk as it can work indepenantly of the lights being on. They do all have associated relays of course. Have you checked them?

Hi Spence
One of the 4 aux switches to the rear of the gear lever is the one that controls the "flash" function and the main beam - bumper lights.

Main headlight switch - 1st position side lights only
- 2nd + headlights up and dipped beam
Stalk -dipped or main beam
Main beam is only on popups with blue light in instruments
IF on main beam and aux switch nr gearlever is on you will also get bumper main beam and indication showing with blue light above dials! (this is also the flash function)

Often the aux switches have there logos worn off so try flashing with the aux switches in different positions until the top blue light comes on!

Or call me - 07811944953 I'm at home today it maybe simpler!

Series one cars have a switch allowing you to turn on the driving lights in the bumper, which also house a sidelight. If you turn them off they wont come on with your headlamps on main beam, and you wont be able to flash unless your lamps are up. Series two cars did away with the switch - different years added and deleted a second blue tell-tale lamp on the binnacle, so you might have one, or you might not.

The paint has worn off mine, and I never quite figured out what that switch was for, and now I know..... the rather useful owners manual I got with the car failed to mention what it was for !

Not a numpty question at all [:)]
