Engine Removal

I was talking a few months ago about fitting an S2 engine instead of my 8v.
What is the best way to remove the engine?
Can it be lifted out? or does it have to come out from underneath?
Making plans to do the swap so need good advice.

The engine can come out of the top or the bottom, but I believe the easiest way for most people would be from underneath.

I've tried both, and I don't think it is worth the hassle of dropping the flywheel and bellhousing in the car in order to lift it.
Use the engine hoist to lift the front of the car high enough to give you clearance to drop the engine down, or, drop the engine and then raise the car higher afterwards.
Oh, and dropping the cross member, for the sake of undoing four bolts, drop the steering rack from the cross-member - it is a lot lighter to remove the two components seperately, and a lot easier to reconeect to the steering shft with the rack loose.

I didn't, I used a jack! I seem to recall a few blocks of wood were required with the jack.
How-ever, I know that I ended up lifting the car off the jack-stands once when liftying the engine back in., so I guess you could lift the car by using the engine lifting points. how-ever, concern over engine mounts would mean that I would prefer to rope around the two front chassis rails.
 
oh, in case you haven't already, dizzy cap and rotor arm technically don't need to come off, but make a huge difference if difference if you do!
 
Just to confirm official factory procedure is to lower it out of the bottom but is 'does' come out the top too, it's just more fiddly.
 
W always drop it. Just raise car about 60cm.

Remove the crossmember drop the engine on to a nice flat piece of wood (old door?), use old seatbelts around the reinserted crossmember bolts and the engine hoist to lift the car up and slide the engine out through a wheel arch.
Thats how I did mine.

No it's not me.It's my friend Pete who does it with style. He's a pilot (flies Airbus A340-300) and re-use old uniform shirts at garage [;)]

Seem to have lost my locking wheel nut key! What a nightmare, the nut is in a deep recess too which makes it a nightmare to get at. Anyone had to deal with this problem before? I dont think I can get the nut off the stud without the proper key. Maybe have to drill the studs out... I know where the nuts were bought so I might be able to find out which type they are.
 
So long as you can get the ball joint undone on the steering rack I suspect you can continue with the engine drop without removing the wheels!
 
You can just undo the wishbone front inner on the crossmember , which should give clearance to remove the crossmember and remove the engine through the opposite wheelarch.

Edit - sorry - getting confused having barbie - may nee to remove both inner mounts of wishbone and use engine hoist to lift front of car and slide engine out under the bumper.
