Fuel problems... gauge goes mad

hello all
another day, another problem...

Ive noticed a new fault with my lux.. Starts perfect, drives well, I do have an Oil on electrodes issue, but my new prob is te following.
After driving fr a while, I can see my fuel gauge beaving heratically, will go from say"50" to suddenly "20" miles per gallon, and obviously that makes my car stall...

Too much petrol coming in, although Im not reving the car at all... fuel pump, old spark plugs, relays |?

i don't know where to start.

looking forward to get some help...
thanks in advance .

mmm..
it seems like prob was caused by the old spark plugs. when for a run with brand ew set of bosch's, seems to behave properly. Just in case it happens to some1 esle.

mmmm..sounds like I was wrong.. gauge going funny again, when I get to a set of lights, I stall.

I say ARGH...
im gona do that lux wicker man style ...

I'm assuming you mean the economy guage rather than the fuel guage?

Mine does exactly the same if it's not been used for a while. I reckon a bit of damp gets in and makes the needle sticky until it's had a run.

No idea why that would have any effect at all on the way the car runs, though! [8|]

They're not very practical on 944s..as far as i know..basically they just act like rev counter - put your foot on floor and you'll get 20 mpg..let it go and there you go 80 mpg..

mmm sounds like a pain...

the economy gauge works well, but seems to indicate a problem somewhere| eg; driving int 4th at mid revs, say 3500 or less, and suddenly a loss of power like te engine is choked, and the economy gauge shoots to 20... then, get to a traffic light and if i dont rev it, it'll stall... Im thinking of fuel pump or something that regulates the fuel feeding... electronics ... oxygen sensor [8|] you name it

but starts first time day and night...
cheers

Had exactly the same symptoms due to an intermittently-faulty temperature sensor. Every know & again it suddenly thought the engine was stone cold, & so chucked a load more fuel in, with predictable results.

eitnurg, thanks,

that kinds of make sense , i'm gona look in that direction. Did you gauge sow odd reading when the engine was over fuelling ?
cheers.

An economy gauge on a sports car whatever next ? [;)]

Good job mine doesn't have one, could get depressing [&:]

Hmmm.....'twas an S2, so no economy gauge.......all the engine symptoms though were exactly as you describe, plus black smoke out of the exhaust.

[8|] ok then ... thanks...

i was looking at an M5 before [;)] on autotrader... i think it's time for leg space and less motor fuss
