fuel tank size

I think the tank on my 88 turbo is 80 litres but it never goes to 4/4 even when it is totally brimmed. The needle always sits just below 4/4.

There appears to be a venting issue with these cars. If you fill up till the pump clicks off you can pull the pump out slightly and keep on topping the tank up. I once did this for about 10 mins once just to see how much more I could get in the tank after the pump clicks off. I eventually got bored and this was the only time my fuel gauge almost, to within a hairs breadth, hit 4/4. I think I managed to squeeze in an extra 8 or 10 ltrs over and above the usual 60ish ltrs fill. I guess you don't want to overfill the tank or there is a risk of fuel coming back up the breather pipe and spilling out.

Good evening Scott. Yes I have been that man at the pump before now. Not sure if it is the car or the modern world mate. New car you don't even bother clicking twice to see full. I think the pumps are a lot more sensitive these days and modern fuel gauges a little less sensitive.

From actually out of fuel, i.e stalled to a full tank you can put about £110 in a tank at today's high octane prices.. not sure exactly how many litres that is I didn't look. Think the fuel was somewhere around £1.20-1.25per litre. Did it when driving my project car home in January. That showed up over the 4/4 mark on the guage.

p.s. the fuel level sensor can get corroded at the top if its not filled up to the brim often so sometimes doesn't read a full tank even if it is. If you keep filling it up full tanks this will usually sort it out (did with my 85' turbo anyway)
