Heater control panel not working

Took my heater control panel (standard, not air conditiong) off the other day to replace a couple of the bulbs in it, and now the damn things not working properly [&o]
I still have 4 speeds on the blower but the heater control knob doesn't do anything (it was set on full and depite turning to cold I still get hot air), the sliders dont change where the air comes out (before fiddling I used to be able to hear the flaps in the dash re-aligning), and the button that you can use to demist the windscreen (the one that overides the settings and pushes all the air out of the top vents) doesn't work.

I have checked all the connections to the back of the unit and all the fuses under the bonnet and are all ok.
Have I overlooked something ?

Howard

PS: the new bulbs look nice though !

Howard,
When I took my panel off I had major problems when I tried to refit it - connector set A kept falling off the connectors as I was putting the panel back. This connector seemed to have the shortest cable.

How difficult was it to replace the bulbs - on my panel the small pea bulbs appear to pass a contiunity check but don't illuminate. Do you know which pins are the power in, and earth , for those bulbs.

Hope your problem is as simple as above.

its not due to the little white plastic cable clip under the passenger dash is it ?
if you do a search its been covered before. You may have pulled on the cable and disconnected or broken the plastic outer-cable clip so that the inner and outer are moving together.

It does sound like the the little white clip on the controls that breaks I replaced mine after looking at Clarks Garage which shows you how to replace it. The parts I seem to remember were pence rather than pounds at Sheffield OPC, when I repaired mine it took about half an hour to do and wasn't a big job . Gav at Sheffield OPC is a top bloke and always happy to help.

I did think it may be the plastic clip issue, but clarks garage suggests that would result in full heat coming from the vents, what I have is low heat (the setting prior to taking the unit out) and no vent movement.

With regards to changing the bulbs, the bulb inside the fan speed knob is simply a standard 286. The other bulbs are a bit trickier as they are soldered on to the heater unit pcb. If you have a small soldering iron and steady hands you van cut the old bulbs off and solder in new ones, its fiddly but not impossible.

I am going to have a closer look at it all at the weekend.

Problem is now sorted, it was the control unit at fault, managed to source another from Elliot at Porkaparts and it works fine.

Does anyone know what causes the units to always fail so you end up with only speed 4? My current car and the one I'm looking at have the same common fault? Is it a resistor that could be replaced?

The resistor sits in the top of the HVAC unit under the dash Lee, it seems to be a common problem. I have a couple of good spare ones here Lee if you need any,
