Indicator Stalk

ORIGINAL: robwright Is it possible to get transfers for the indicator stalk? After having cleverly fixed the self cancel mechanism this weekend and given it a good few more years of life I thought it could just do with freshening up.
Good question! There was a company in the States who did transfers for the consol switches at least.

Rob how did you cleverly fix the self cancelling mechanism? Mine needs to cleverly fixed too.

Mine would only not cancel on left turns. On closer inspection there is a tab that juts out the bottom of the steering wheel that acts upon a white plastic piece in the indicator stalk. This plastic piece only sticks out when the indicator is on. It will let the wheel pass in the direction you are signalling but resists movement in the opposite way thus pushing the white plastic piece in and cancelling the signal. In my case the plastic piece was worn on one side and the tab on the steering wheel simply brushed past it. I simply built the piece back up by gluing a small piece of a very small plastic cable tie to it. This was enough to give resistance against the steering wheel tab and knock the indicator off. I knew I should have taken some pics lol. That's the best description I can give in words. Whip the steering wheel off mate and all will become clearer. If it isn't worn and the mechanism is shot then it's a new switch cluster I am afraid and as far as I can see it's both switches left and right. Either that or live with it. I suggest probably the latter [:)]

Thanks I will have a look and if a bit of glue and plastic won't do the trick which it might as it does work every now and then I will live with it.

Oddly the one I've just taken off was screwed togather, the one I put on had rivets holding it togather! I think someone had a go at the old one as part off the plastic holding the spring had snapped. But I could also do with transfers.

I think the self-cancelling thing is a moderately common failure. A friend's S2 indicator stalk failed like this (while I was driving it, embarrassingly!), and getting a replacement was surprisingly expensive as they were quite in demand second-hand. It was properly broken as well - the mounting pins of the aforementioned white plastic tag had broken and it was beyond repair. I think he paid £40 or so for the replacement assembly. Oli.
