K26-6 Turbo wanted? AKA, err, I don't think it should make that noise...

Well, I thought I had fixed teh oil leak on the turbo, changed the seals on the oil feed to the turbo, oil pressure restored - 4 Bar on idle... tried it up the road, fine, check that it boosts OK (have had a problem with that in the past), fine, then sudden loss of power, sudden vibration, cloud of smoke out of the back of the car, drop in oil presure.

Hmmm guess I didn't fix it then, and what ever was thinking of breaking is now "propper broke". Oil is once again pouring down that side of the engine (easy to see this time as I had cleaned it all up under there...

My biggest fear is that if it is, as I suspect, something on the turbo gone bang, it is on the inlet side and it has gone through the engine causing further damage... Will a turbo really cause that much noise and vibration when it lets go?

So... If a K26-6 turbo comes up (anyone upgrading?)... any idea what I should pay for a good second hand one? I presume they should be relatively easy to come by? what do I look for? End float?

Oooh sh*t, sorry to hear that! are all the pipes still attached? i would start by looking at the turbo intake as its easy to get to, any blade damage? Still V unusual for the oil to get outside the turbo other than through the exhaust. If there is a big air leak in the area then you can expect rough running. good luck! Tony
 
Oddly they are not that easy to come by in the UK mate. I would go for a recon unit. Your best bet for that is Lynsey Racing in the states. I got one from them in 3 days.
 
OK... having taken the inlet hose from the turbo, all vanes present and correct, spins freely, stops spinning in a variety of places, so I believe in balance. barely detectable end float... I don't think it is the inlet side of the turbo... And, I really didn't think the turbo could cause that much vibration. A quick chat with Simon P, and I'm taking the belt housing off... All belts look present and correct, no obvious oil leaks... so I figure there must be something to see on the side of the block, so inlet manifold off again... This time, I can see it... where teh oil feed to teh turbo bolts onto the balance shaft housing, there is a big hole in the balance shaft housing:-(. Haven't a clue what caused it, but cannot now remember if the balance shaft runs half in the block, half in the housing, or purely in the housing... eitherway... it is looking expensive... and I haven't a clue what in the balance shaft housing could punch a hole in the side of it! I look forward to your speculations and suggestions whilst I go and have a drink...
 
That is a bit of a bugger as the housings are matched to the block, so you cant just change the housing. I would take the housing off, find out what caused it (possibly a bolt backing out) and take it to a friendly welder, assuming its not totally toasted. The balance shaft does run half in the block and half in the housing, hopefully the block's not been damaged.
 
Yep... I feared they were matched to the block... hadn't actually thought of having it welded... I had started looking into the supposed "racers' mod" of freeing up horse power by leaving the balance belt off, but it doesn't sound like it is a suitable option for a road car. I'll have to see what the damage is...
 
I ran my first 944 without a balance belt for some time as I didnt know the belt was missing until I changed the cam belt. The difference wasn't massive. Apparently things can start to be damaged by the extra vibration, such as the oil pick up cracking. Not sure if its true or its just assumed to be true. Best of luck.
 
I have a used K-27-6 I bought from a reputable source in the USA as an upgrade for my car a few years ago and never fitted. You can have that for £400 if you're interested. It needs some adapters to fit a car without a MAF. Steve
