1 - i've bought a cat 1 alarm (toad ai606). where's the best place to;

a) get into the central locking, and what's the wire code?
b) put the imobiliseing wires (2x). they can take 20amps?
c) go through the bulkhead for the siren?
d) put the (fob button) boot undoer?

2 - i've got a cat2 immobiliser on the car currently (push in headphone jack type thing). does anyone hav the vaugest clue as to how many things it'll immobilise? it stops the windows from working.

3 - does anyone have any pictures/links to 944's with aftermarket stereos (subwoofer)?

4 - do the pop up H4's work on full beam, or do i just have two duff fillaments?

5 - are flashing door knobs standard fitment?

6 - the boot release button only releases half of the boot. is this a common problem with a common soloution?

Dave

I'm afraid my experience with 944's is limited to mechanical stuff only, so the only answers I can provide are:

4 - Yes, both the pop up headlights should provide full-beam when the blue full-beam light is on the dashboard. I'd be surprised if both bulbs have simultaneously blown the same filament, more likely to be a fuse/ relay issue

5 - Not that I'm aware of

6- Never experience this myself but likely to be a wire/ connection issue as the central motor should open both sides

Good Luck,

Chris

how big are the popup headlights?

my plan is to get something like;

but rhd/better (bmw?), thus use the pop ups for hid's, and use the bumper lights for full beams.

I think flashing door knobs came with the factory alarm/immobiliser system so were not standard fittment. I've seen it before on 944's and 946's & 993's too. Quite cool I think.

Series one 944s, 924Ss and early series two 944s use Golf Mk1 lamps, but 1988 year onwards 944s use a unique lamp with provision for light level adjustment. If youre happy to lose this feature then you can use Golf Mk1 replacement lamps, because theyre physically identical, other than the adjuster attachment.

You know what Dave, Ive owned several late series two cars over the years, but Im going to have to check my handbook before I answer. My 2.7 is in Derbyshire and Im currently in Yorkshire...

Confirmed [:D] Switches ahead of the gear lever and below the oddments box: far right. Its a roller-type switch, as youd expect. This wasnt an option, it was a feature introduced on the 1988 model year cars, so yours should have it fitted, unless someones already removed it in order to fit cheaper new lamp units.

I can answer 3 & 5.

Flashing door lock buttons were part of the factory immobiliser option. I've got them too. They're a good indicator of whether your battery has died, being the last thing to stop working!

I've got a 9" sub in the boot, but it's not worth showing you a picture because it's completely hidden.

I bought a custom MDF sub box from KLA in the States. It's designed to fit into the storage cubby under the boot carpet on the driver's side. All I needed to do was remove the foam padding from that flap of carpet. Sounds great and doesn't take up any room in the boot. I run it from a small Alpine amp mounted vertically on the bulkhead in front of the spare wheel "¦ so again, completely hidden under the boot carpet.

The front speakers I replaced with JBL component ones. The rears I left standard. I run it all from a Becker Grand Prix head unit and an iPod mounted inside the armrest. again, all hidden from view with cabling routed under the dash trim (and around the ashtray!)

The Becker head units are a little expensive but really look the part. The plastic even matches the stuff Porsche made the dash out of. Much nicer than a generic Halfords unit with flashing lights and chrome effect all over the place.

Sorry I don't have any close up shots of the head unit, but you can see how well it fits in from this pic:

You can also just about see one of the JBL front speakers on the drivers' door as well. I left them exposed rather than putting grilles over them. The hardest part of that was finding some piano black screws for mounting them with, so as not to look too shoddy. B&Q came through in the end.

If you're thinking of doing anything with decent sound systems, be careful with your insurance choices"”most classic car policy providers aren't willing to cover more than a couple of hundred quid's worth of stereo kit. I found a policy with Highway Insurance, through a broker called T. R. Young's, that offers up to £500.
