My New Truck

First time I have bought a car in a couple of years and I know I promised myself not to buy an old car again but I couldn't pass a deal on this lovely beast [:)]
RangieDSE.jpg

Went on autotrader on Friday, did the deal yesterday and picked the old girl up today. So far everything works including the A/C, air suspension replenished last year the whole lot, rides like a dream. This is a first for me but I am starting to like this thing, in fact rather a lot. I know I am not the only one on here with a bit of secret landie or rangie love [:D].

Best bit, now I don't have to drive the race car on the road.

Happy motoring all.

[:D] Diesel. My mate had a V8, he was spending 100 quid a week to fuel the thing. This one has a much nicer engine than the last DSE I looked at, starts fine and not too noisy, fine when cruising along for example. A few ppl I know reckon 30 mpg is possible from the diesel, official figures are high 20's combined cycle. Not expecting great economy when towing though.

I dont think you'll achieve more than 25 in norma use TBH , but I was hopeing you would say a diesel (for your sake) . I have never wanted a 4 by 4 to 'pose in' as they all did in North London where I came from BUT having been snowed in my village last winter and having so many potholes down here as well as rough tracks ( one of which i live on) , I bloomin fancy one these days I can tell you [:D]

Best of luck with the car , sounds like you have bought a high end example.

Got me a dico TD5 and it is great, i can get 35+ on a run and 25 around the doors, starts on the button and is very quiet and comfortable when cruising, it would also pull a house down !
I will have a disco 3 someday, a low mileage fully loaded one for sale just up the road but i can do without more debt at present !
Paddock Landrover are good for spares and consumables.

Actually only £3K so pretty much as cheap as you can find them. I keep thinking there must be a catch but this one is in great nick to my eye, and at 106K miles is fairly low miles for one of these. The last one I looked at was 160K miles and up at £3.5K. This one is better and cheaper. Definitely pays to keep an eye out as the prices on these seem to be all over the place.

Sounds like a bleddy good buy for the money / recent work done. Nice job. [8D]

Wifey's D3 in Cairngorms in May (check the snow!) and Loch Lomond. Fab beast.

Cheers, in the past 10K its had all fluids, all 4 air bags and compressor, a couple of bushes and loads of little jobs. I am pretty smitten with it TBH. Only fault is the drivers seat is pretty torn up on the outside thigh bolster, passenger side OK and rear seats like new. I will get Piper up in Sparkford to sort it.

Very different drive to a Porsche but cruising down the M5 in this beasty is very relaxing indeed.

Wonderful pictures btw, really wonderful.

I was too chicken for a P38 so I'll raise you a classic LSE. 6 weeks in all seems well, just got to fix the leaks!!
4.2 V8 so it likes a drink (mainly LPG)
As you say a bit different to the 944.

Looks good. Btw on the leaks, I believe there is an old saying about LR products, start worrying when they stop leaking as it must have run out of oil [:D]. This one amazingly isn't leaking at the moment but a couple of the old MoT advisories note oil leaks.

Nice tow vehicle.
Have you got yourself a trailer yet.???
This racing "lark" doesnt come cheap does it.????
Dave.

Cheers Dave, and your right it certainly doesn't come cheap but a lot of it is touch wood, start up costs. I don't have my own trailer and after talking to a few ppl re: trailer theft, I have decided to rent in the short term. I don't have anywhere secure to store a trailer anyway so it sort of forces my hand.

Dave you guys can't be far off your first race? ISTR it was sometime around July/August.

Do I see dirt on your lens Mik? [;)]

Range Rover looks good Neil - I love the sound of the Rover V8, but as you suggest, the fuel costs for one of them is a bit silly, and I reckon the Diesel makes more sense as a tow car too.

This one is a manual as well so probably the ideal towing combination, lever looks about 3 foot long though and has the maddest long throw, reminds me of driving a van [:D]. Luckily once you get up to cruising speed the engine noise is subdued and it becomes a genuinely relaxing way to waft about.

Neil,
Your quite correct, we arnt that far off.
Although the suspension suppliers are dragging there feet somewhat..Its been on order for around 6 weeks...[][][][8|][8|][][][]
The cars is almost done apart from the fitting of the 4 corners....
I bought myself a BJ trailer in the "off" season. Ive used it quite a bit , not just ferrying the Beemer around , but as the 968 has no tax its been trailered to Tdays...

No dirt Cup2Boy, but you will see a dirty great smudge on the lens on the lower photo - towards the nearside headlight. [&:] [:D]

I have since removed the fingers of the 9yr old responsible. That'll teach him. [8D]

I got an L plate Rangy classic with the 200tdi engine and its a manual and it easily breaks the 30mpg, Its a bit slow and its only got cloth interior, but great workhorse and its actually a really comfy tourer. Best sounding factory stereo I have seen in a car also, think its the size (acoustics) but it sounds great. Shame its not a V8 in a way as thats the best soundtrack, but then again I would get sick of filling it up all the time if it was lol. Have had to weld it up for last two mots but remarkably very reliable and hassle free otherwise. love them!

Its the part costs that swung it for me in the end. I understand one has to keep an eye on these cars and they will require regular maintenance, however statistically even the P38 has a better reliability index score than the Tourag, X5 or Jeep Cherokee, and surprisingly or not better than the boxster which says a lot about Porsche products these days. Even major stuff that ppl whinge about such as the DMF and clutch package for one of these only costs a few hundred quid compared to mega bucks for say a 968, most parts though seem to be amazingly cheap if LR dealers are avoided.

Diabloam your description pretty much agrees with my experience of this wagon so far, put about £80 worth of diesel in and after 80 miles still inside the top 1/8th on the gauge. Either the gauge is a liar or it genuinely is as economical as many claim.

Parts, certainly for the classics are laughably cheap, I got new front disks and pads for mine recently (OEM quality discs and mintex pads) and its was only 44 pound and we aint talking small discs here, there is a lot of metal in them (pain to fit though as you basically have to strip off hubs and bearing etc but they generally easy to work on. Also how about two front shocks at about £13 + vat each, clutch is about £70 plus there are endless bits on ebay for them for next to nothing. I got a full stainless system in great shiny nick for £15. Cause I can weld them up myself (achillies heel on these things and earlier discoveries, generally sills, boot floor and rear crossmembers) you can actually keep them going for pennies, plus the 200 tdi unit is bomb proof. Would love the V8 but to be honest actually quite the slow and mellow pace of my diesel one. The later P38 are way superior to drive on the road (but not any better offroad) and have a beemer diesel engine, which is excellent but has known issues with the pump giving up on some of them (see any BMW forum for assosciated horror stories, can be V. pricy) and later S3 discoveries TD5 are known to be not as tough as the earlier units also, but guess this is the price you pay for more refinement and performance.

Reading this post it occurs to me as quite funny how not only are we all 944 lovers on here, but there seems to be quite a few of us that have a fondness for landy stuff also, I personally think a Range Rover (even a new pimpy type one) still manages to be just that much classier than the opposition, I personally wouldnt be seen dead driving an X5 as although its the same type of thing is just has to much of the lower league footballer/minor drug dealer lustre to it, lol, although sure I am going to get a post back here from an owner giving me abuse, lol. And of course to top things off anything old and battered that has a landy badge on it is just cool, full stop. Anyway sorry for long post, you can tell I am bored at work, cheers all
