Oil for Derv, whoops.

In haste, I accidentally bought Shell 15w40 (Diesel) oil and stuck just under a litre in my car yesterday (A stupid thing to do I know but they bottles are almost identical - apart from one little word). I haven't noticed any problems so far and have been doing a lot of miles, both city and motorway driving. Is it so bad? I mean it's just oil after all. If it is bad then should I try and dilute it with normal oil?

Thanks

Lloyd

a lot oils get used in both petrols and diesels.

ford use one oil (5w30) across the range.

i carn't see why it's different, unless it's better (most diesels have turbos).

:)

I dont think it would be too harmful, certainly short term, but I would do an oil and filter change sooner tather than later.

I would love to know what the difference is in the formulation - just like those oils claiming to be for high mileage cars!

Most diesel oils have a higher detergent content in them so your engine will be getting a good clean!

So many discussions about oil, and everyone will have different opinions.

But mine is that in an engine thats 20+ years old with normally well over 100k under its belt then you're not going to run into major problems, I've done 1k a month in mine for the past 2 months, I've burnt over 1.5ltrs of oil and what have I replaced it with? Asda's £1.69 20/50.

Why you may ask? well because I know that by the end of the summer it'll have doen 1k every month, come the beginning of Sept it'll get a service and a fill of GTX HM. A couple of litres of it won't do any damage (just my opinion and I'm not a mechanic [;)]

Oil is one of the biggest cons in the world. You pay for a name! There are 2 main suppliers of additive packages that supply the manuafacturers. There are not many more manuafacturers of the base oils either, Shell being the biggest in the UK. You don't get what you pay for unfortunately in this instance!

If you look in the Technical section at the bottom of the Forum there's an Oil & Fuel topic. It's frequented by an expert from Opie Oils....bet you'll get a definitive answer if you post there.

Simon - Oilman - doesnt seem to have been around for a while, dont know why, but if you look through the thread it is likley you'll find the answer.

Agree with Alasdair, it has more detergents in it for cleaning dirty engines that run on Satan's fuel. Won't do any harm.
