Welcome along.

There are some well known issues whith all cars and the 944 is no exception, have a read through the forums and you'll find out what they are.

Full and proper cambelt/balance belt inc. tensioner at a local garage approx. £500, now it depends on how much work you are willing to take on yourself, I do all my own work with the exception of welding
Do it yourself, follow the guides to the letter and you can do it in a day for £200 (took me 5 hours inc. lunch and coffee and I bought the whole kit for £160)

Check oil pressure after a run when the engine is hot should stil read over 4, sills are a weak point as you've probably read, despite having a full ticket check the whole sill including ends.
Wing bottoms tend to rot as well.
But if it has 12 months from a reputable garage and there is a decent service history you can't go far wrong, where are you? sure someone local could try and call down to look at it with you

Might be no visible rust, but check inside sills as in other thread. The stone-chip protection on the car will hide rust until it's serious.

Cambelt every 4 years maximum, don't let it go any longer. It's not complicated if you work on cars yourself, Club members can borrow the tensioning tool for nothing.

Oil pressure can look good, sender gets stuck on maximum. Should drop to around 2.5-3 when hot.

Otherwise, it's just a car; albeit a 25 year old one. If the body's good then just follow common sense and check it out as you would any other car. I'm sure someone would go with you if you let us know where you are. [:)]

welcome to the forum Rifleman . Incidentally what dicipline do you shoot ? not service rifle by any chance ? .had my first experience of .303 No4 at 400 and 500yds last weekend and I'm totally hooked [:(] Another money pit has just opened.

Look for evidence that the car has had some servicing and repairs in the recent past. A car without any service tickets in the service book is a bit of a lottery. It would tend to indicate a car that has been driven until breakdown before it receives any servicing or repair.

Just bare in mind that whilst its just another car ,any repairs are going to cost a lot more . If you cannot see proof that the cam belt has been replaced within the last 4 years then allow for at least £550 -£700 for belts, tensioner and waterpump as others have said. Use it as a bargaining point to negotiate the price down. If the belt breaks on an interferance engine like the 944 then your engine is effectivel scrap !

Unless the car is exceptional and has a reasonable service history with receipts I wouldn't expect to be paying much more than £2000 tops for this year. If it needs belts ,pump, tyres and new suspension and brake componants you should halve that . There are plenty of tidy 944S2 3ltr cars out there for £3000 or less and they are in a different league.

Thanks for all your advice guys i am on n yorkshire /cleveland border i am a welder by trade and do have some mechanical knowhow but cam belts are not a good point for me .
Peanut i shoot full bore 12 g 22 rimfire and air rifles sorry about this but it is mainly vermin despatch i do agree another money pit .
The guy selling the 944 phoned me and said he would drop the price from 1400 to 1250 as he would like me to have the car he told me everything worked no oil or water leaks and no rust .
Come and see it you will be suprised he said .
What do you guys think

thats less than 2x weeks wages if the national statistics are to be believed.
If it has 12 months MOT you can't go far wrong with that price I shouldn't have thought as long as you don't intend it to be your primary transport [;)]

If you like it and it looks tidy and runs well I'd take it.

The only advice I'd give about driving it would be don't do wheelie starts. The 944 clutch generally has a rubber centre (do-nut) which does a good job of cushioning the transmission take up . It won't stand up too well to dropping the clutch at the lights . Broken clutches are one of the most common major failures within the first months of new ownership .

Always good to get someone with a bit of experience to look at 944s, but I dont know if there is anybody in your area.
Rust wise the sills are the biggest problem, they can look ok , minor external marks visible, but be totally had it inside.
The vent in the B pillar can be removed and a torch can give an indication of the state of them.
Watch out for repaired accident damage, even well done repairs, as they could have been done 20 years ago, and unless very well done there will have been some damage to the galvanising, leading to a possible place for R to get a toehold.
1250 is ok if it is as good as he says.
Mike

Andy i think you should be aware that the plastic vent grilles in the door jamb are a press fit and sometimes very difficult to remove without either breaking the retaining clips or gouging the paintwork.
New grilles are quite expensive so if I were you I would ask the owner to remove them then he can break them [;)]
