Personal Plates - thoughts

AntB

New member
So - many people have said I should get a personal plate for the 944.. Not one for the car but one that represents me (i.e. my name)

So - I am looking at one that is F** ANT

What are peoples thoughts on personal plates??

Good - Bad - waste of money - nice finishing tough?

Welcome thoughts

Anthony

Why not mate I have always had one before the Porsche. Sold it with the car thogh because it was too new to go on it. Was nothing fancy just my initials. Don't see a problem with them myself.

Hi
I think they are a nice idea, my initials MP, no middle one, make for a very expensive plate, so I got one for the car A9XXC A 944 Coupe or Convertible, X being the universal unknown! It had to be an "A" due to the age of the car.
My wife has S44DYB (Sandy B) which I bought before we got married, and the family car has M13KMP - Mick MP - but that is too new for the 944.
Go for it.

Never really had one but did like having a NI plate on my '24S, and now looking for one for the '44, personal opinion is that they look daft on a rotten old Micra or Mondeo, but on an older or modern car it can be a nice finishing touch.

I have a private plate on my car. Was very lucky. WIL 2944. Name and car model. Also appropriate my 2nd 944 too.

I have name and car model... went to the DVLA and got them to release the plate I wanted for auction. After I took it off my last car and put its old plate back on, the whole car seemed to loose some of its presence... it really seemed to make that much difference... so... if I were you, ring up the DVLA and see if you can get F944ANT released!!!

I just did the opposite.... car came with WIB 6814 and I went to the DVLA on Friday to return it to it's original G plate (which was really easy and, amazingly, free)

I think it only works if it works for you (if you see what I mean) WIB meant nothing to me and smacked of trying to hide the car's age.

I'm not against them - my preference is for numbers that link to the car. Many of our customers have them (we look after Ford GTs) and if I had a GT I'd have GT number I'm sure (must keep saving...)

Reason i like personal plates is it sort of makes the car looks tidier, massive number plates just look a bit messy to me,plus if i buy an old car it puts my stamp on it so it looks like my car.Cars and people nothing odder eh!?[:D]

Lol, you should try looking for my initials, PM 1 would be nice....[8|]

For what it's worth I don't like private plates. Really good ones, such as A1, are fine. Most only make sense if you know the owner, otherwise they are just a sign that the owner has money to throw away. Fair enough if you have the money, I don't so it's a bit beyond me. As I'm basically skint, I see the ads for kids in Africa with cleft palates, then the ads for private plates, and I struggle to justify one over the other. Not meaning to get at people with private plates, just that I can't afford to do all I want and therefore it's pretty low on my list of priorities.

I always wanted to change VJ's plate back to a period registration. I want people to know that the car is over 20 years old, not trying to look younger. I guess I'm unusual in wanting my Porsche to look older, cheaper and less flashy! [&:]

I have to admit Paul that when I got the 944 as I had always previously had a private plate people asked me if I was getting one for the Porsche? My reply to them was no I can't transfer it because the car is too old and why should I hide the fact that she is 22 years old. I prefer to celebrate it. Have to admit that anything with 944 in the plate is pretty god damn expensive though and like you is pretty far down my list below aircon compressor, drivers side front wing repair etc. But if you can afford it and want it more power to you [:)]

Yes, go for it! But if you are going to spend good money, go for something you would like to keep and transfer to another car if and when you change car. The shorter the number and the least letters, the better....... I think it gives the finishing touch.

We went for car age related plates and managed to get lucky.

I bought G944 PRR via this Forum for £125.00 two years ago, and Mac's plate for his Supersport came with a Ford Fiesta thrown in for free. E911 MAC cost £600.00 and the Fiesta was used for twelve months by his son-in-law. The number plate is particularly good because it is car, age related, and name related.

However when you have a friend who probably owns the ultimate private plate, it all seems slightly irrelevant. Dean Easterby a member of Lancs & Cumbria Region has 1DLE on his 964, (his middle name begins with an L). That number looks superb and fits the criteria that Harriet suggests...the shorter the better.

I can't see the point in trying to hide the car's age . Its obviously what it is....an old obsolete car from the 80's/90's that has become a classic due to its age . I think we should celebrate the fact .

I've never had a private plate but if the opportunity presented itself to get one with an association with my name or business or something meaningful at a sensible price I might have been tempted 20+ years ago.

My car still turns heads in interest and admiration and has little boys saying 'wow cool car mister' thats good enough for me

I like them. At a service station on Sunday we saw a battered old Transit with G1 PPO and that made me smile[:D] My plate makes my car look older than it is - which is fine by me.[;)]

As peanut said, i don't think much of private plates and most peeps will also try to hide the year of their car with one. I particularly like to show the age of the car and also the fact that it's nearly, if not older than most my friends

My '86 944S came with a D944 plate which luckily corresponds with the age. I guess it's not so bad if the plate resembles the car model but i dislike owners initials, cryptic or ones like F45T C4R

I like them when they clearly spell something, or initials. Can't stand them when you have to pretend that an 8 is an e, or when you have to mess about with the spacing for it to spell what you want. You can get a fixed penalty for moving the spacing. I have FIL 463 on my daily driver, an Irish plate that I have had for 20 years.

I have 2 so yes I like them, I also think we should be like the USA and register you own plate with what ever you like and keep it for life after all it would eliminate number plate fraud and mistaken identiy as its very unique.

3 years ago I had a claim against me for apperantly hitting a car in a service station at 1pm in Hertfordshire, I work in London and travel by train!!
the car is parked at the station all day every day, the problem eventually was sorted as 1 digit was written down wrong.

The ironic thing is there is still a non fault claim registered against me.

By the way my Reg no are ALW 4Y & Y4 ALW, my intials or Andy & Lin Watson and for what its worth make both cars look older
