Hi every one , im new to this so any info would be appreciated , I have a 1986 944 turbo which was running lumpy , it would start from cold fine then once stopped and re-started would run lumpy ( like it wanted to clear its throat ) which it would do after 20 seconds or so , I was told the AFM maybe at fault so had it cleaned !!!! i am now told it is scrap although ECU cleaner was used on it ??
the part no is 0280 203 026 which i cant source ?? i am told this maybe the incorrect one for the car anyway so maybe thats why it was running strange ??

can any one shed any light on the Correct Part no for the 944 turbo or my best course of action to take , i looked at a stealth maf kit but £700 is a bit strong at the mo !!

thanks spencer

Hello and welcome.

You will most likely get a better response if you post this in the main 944 forum

If it is the airflow meter at fault then it is most likely that the arm has worn a track through the variable resistor (which is effectively what the AFM is). If you look on You Tube then you will find a chap showing you how to dismantle the AFM and change the radius of the arm that drags across the variable resistor so it is basically as good as new. Looked pretty simple to me.

Not quite as simple as it may look as there is precious little movement available on the arm. Having done it (I think without success), I'm slightly perplexed as to how anyone thinks they can get the arm to bend enough to cover a different bit of track.

Did you move the arm up or down on the post first ?.

Thanks for the info & the move !!!

seen the video on you tube , thats what may have made it worse ! the resistor track looked ok , so i cleaned the sensor connections and the track with ECU cleaner alcohol free n all that , but then i got a no of Porsche sutton coldfield for a place who do this sort of thing, who found it highly amusing that some one else had scrapped his AFM from cleaning it off advise on you tube !!!

Problem is , they dont have the part no 0280 203 026 on there records to do any thing with it, ie: refurb or laser alighnment etc they have a 0280 203 029 ! but he cany tell me if thats for the turbo ?????

could only happen to me !!! and now to finish me off , went out for a 30 round trip to come back smelling of Fumes, perol or exhaust ,,,, coming in the car somehow some where i think ??

A lot of the Porsche Centres are not terribly au fait with our older cars, but if you are based around the Sutton Coldfield area I would recommend you call EMC in Birmingham http://www.emcmotorsport.co.uk/ They are not just about race cars and will have the 944 specific knowledge to help you out

Alternatives are to call http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/ who may have a S/H one in stock

If you definitely want a new one from Porsche then call the parts department at Porsche Exeter, they really know their way around the 944 parts lists and will mailorder anywhere in the UK

No. Is that possible? If it is then that may be the key to the process that I am missing ...

In which case, many thanks. Do you need to 'release' the arm or is it just a case of levering it up (or down) with a small screwdriver?

Thanks for the suggestion!

Bite the bullet and change to a MAF as the difference is amazing but if you don't and need an AFM I have a brand new one I've been meaning to sell and your welcome to try it first to see if it solves your problem. I am in Surrey

I wouldn't be surprised if this adjustment isn't what was intended from Bosch to extend the life of the unit. It struck me when I saw the video on You Tune how much wider than the wiper contact the track was. The only purpose for this extra width in my mind would be to allow for adjustment as described.

Rick ware , i would have took that off you !! arhhh .... i bought one today whilst at work of Pro max a new bosch one £156 + vat , douglas valley had one very helpfull guy there called Graham , but 2nd hand unit no info wantred £125 + vat + shipping ..... ok with warranty to work but .... played safe !! .... spoke to promax about there MAF which they withdrew from sale after problems ..

see if this fixes the problem , thanks all ill let you know [;)]
