Replace sunroof lifters with clips

My sunroof is giving me a bit of jip. The chaps at RPM suggested ripping out the motor and associated gubbins and replacing it with some clips that can be bought on US ebay that work in a similar function to the standard clips on the front of the sunroof. I would lose the tilt function but still be able to remove the sunroof for al fresco driving.

I never use the tilt function so it sounds like a good idea to me. The standard roof mechanism seems to cause no end of problems but you would shed a bit of weight from the car ;)

Has anyone done this?

Years ago when I had a 1982 944 it didnt have a motor, just 4 latches holding it in place. I found you could undo the 2 rear ones and then push up the rear of the sunroof placing the latches in a vertical position, wedged into the rain gutter [:D]
It certainly stayed in place at motorway speeds.

That might well work, although whether it's safe is another question.

When my cogs went, the arms were fully retracted and obviously wouldn't come out to latch the roof. For a couple of months it was unattached at the back, but would lift at about 60 mph then would hover about an inch open. Very noisy, and not secure, but I couldn't see how it could open any more, or come out at speed, as the faster you went the more it was forced down.
