Roll reduction

Recently replaced the coils and shocks on my '84 944. Still a bit wooly to drive and a bit of roll round corners. I'd like it to be a bit more level going around corners -- what should I replace renew next? Anti-roll bar bushes, wishbones, ? What order?

There isn't much point just replacing stuff for its own sake. What you want to do is check it all and determine what needs to be replaced.

In that case, you might as well just replace all of it then. It won't matter what order you do it in.

If it was me, I'd strip it down and check everything to see what actually needed to be replaced and what will keep going for another 21 years.[:)]

Roll is mostly down to the Dampers and Anti Roll Bar.

My AX GT had top Racing Konis on (Had turned the adjustment to max on the dampers) and you couldnt rock it, and even my 20 stone mate sitting on the arch struggled to lower the car by 1cm.

Only trouble is after 1 month the virbrations started to take the car to bits, even the dash was starting to come out!

Best bet for yourself now would be to fit a thicker anti roll bar with good poshes, at an extreme Group A

Check ARB bushings and replace them if necessary, why not with polyurethane ones. If it still rolls afterwards, you will need to fit bigger ARBs.

What shocks did you fit ?
Simple Koni yellows are the vital minimum in terms of stiffness if you wish to get minimal body control.
Stock shocks just aren't good.

Wouldn't harder bushes induce more roll? If you've replaced your springs and shocks with new ones which are standard equipment then anti-roll bars is your next and only step.

Some of the 250 turbo guys who have to M030 suspension have complained about body roll so I think you are looking at upgrading with aftermarket stuff if you really want to curb the roll.

Harder bushes mean quicker reactions from ARBs. You lose in comfort, progressiveness and roll inertia what you gain in reactivity and preciseness.

edited 'cause I can't spell

Yup, I have. Compared to my Westy and Ginetta G27 its positively soggy.

I noted the upper ARB bushes are toast but the bottoms are ok so will start there however its a `Weltmeister` ARB for me, adjustable so you can (in theory) dial out induced oversteer/understeer that can come with changing shock/camber settings

One cheap and chearful mod which I think helps extract the best possible performance from your existing ARB's are the ARB drop link stiffening brackets you can get from ESS. The are only £20 or so and are just a simple bracket that triangulates the ARB drop links to the main subframe of the car. It eliminates any flexing of the ARB drop links under cornering and makes sure the ARB's are doing their stuff. A nice cheap mod and simple to fit. I feel that the combination of 968 castor bushes and these brackets have really sharpened up the front end of my car so I feel confident that I will get maximum benefit from any future suspension or bushing mods I might install.

Thanks for all your replies. ARB bushings and drop links it is then, I suspect. BTW this was started when I saw a pair of wishbones for sale on Ebay. What function have these and why would you have to replace them?

never heard of that, methinks its a good interim fix [;)]

get all the bushes and equipment as good as it can be, then swap the anti roll bars to thicker ones. In your case, switch to 944 turbo or ideally 968 bars.

What shocks and coils did you fit?

Stock I'm afraid. Just got a pair of wishbones off of Ebay. How do you get the inner anti-roll bar bushings on: are they split? I suppose I'm in for heaps of rusty fun trying to get the wishbones off then...?

I think those brackets are manufactured by KLA... See http://www.klaindustries.net/swaybrkt/swaybrkt.htm

Tarret make ones for the front:
