Hallo fellow 944 nuts! Have recently bought a 944 S2 1991. Looking for an independent specialist to service and generally look after her. Any recommendations or thoughts from anyone?

Thanks!

Chris

If you want anything remotely complicated or technical including fault finding / tuning then my advice is travel to Promax Motorsport in Beds. I'm not aware of anyone in Cambs personally but am aware of one or two in Herts not worth a cigarette paper !

Oh and a rolling Road in Cambs where you can take a Porsche 944 in running healthily
and find it come out sick as a dog.

You are wise to ask around [;)]

Enjoy your car

Decent indies in the South East aren't much more than a local garage per hour. They know their way around the cars quickly, so you end up saving money.

I use RPM in Tring, but only because they are a bit nearer than Promax. Auto 2000 in Bedford have a good reputation, but I've heard that the owner retired - anyone confirm this?

I've had lots of little jobs done locally, they are only cars after all. For general once-per-year service, or more major jobs, I would always travel a bit further to someone who's passionate about the cars.

Don't know of any Cambridgeshire based specialists but another "shout" for Promax at Milton Keynes or alternatively Autostrasse near Colchester might be a possibility for you.

Auto 2000 is still going - Charles Marsland (3.2 Reg Secretary) used to run this at Kempston Bedford - Auto 200 is still up and running in the hands of one guys who Charles used to employee.

Hi, sorry missed this, there are 2 Specialists in Cambs, Barr tech in Cambridge:
http://www.barr-tech.com/barrtech/site/index.html

who are fabulous but pricey

and I use TWG Motorsport in Peterborough:
http://www.twgsport.co.uk/

Where my car is right now having a huge amount of work done! (not looking forward to the bill!)

I'm not out to criticise Bar Tech because I have never used them and they may be fantastic !

However I do wonder what qualifies a garage as a porsche specialist.

The reason I ask is that there site boasts " We are specialists in Italian, German, French and Japanese cars "
isn't that pretty close to saying we specialise in repairing cars full stop.

My friend had his 968 rebuilt there after an innocuous little bump revealed a previous owner's track day faux pas followed by cover-up bodge repair. They were extremely diligent in their work and also allowed him to interlace other jobs in (whilst the gearbox is out do you want to change the fuel lines and bearings at little extra labour?)
They also replaced my front wing under previous ownership and it is the only nice shiny red bit on my car! (Not for long, from saturday it will be a glorious patchwork of gloss red and flat pink![:)])

Although not strictly Cambs I can very strongly recommend Mark Fish Motorsport in Harlow just south of Cambridge of Jn 7 of the M11.

I've known Mark for 20yrs and he's serviced/ fettled all of my cars:

Renault 5 GT Turbo race car - championship winning
Porsche 924 race car - front runner
Porsche 944 S2 - track car
Saab 93 - company car
BMW E34 M5 - track car
Porsche Turbo S - track car

He's on 01279 431628
