Strange Electrical Gremlin

Car blew a fuse at some point in the last few days, fuse 11

Wierd bit is the immobiliser is connected to it along with the clock, interior light etc.

Well I replaced it and all the ignition lights on the dash came on, turned the engine over and it started with no problem, but when it turned the ignition off and removed the key engine still runs, wouldn't stop til I took the fuse out [&:]

Car runs fine otherwise, only quirk is that with the fuse out I need to turn the ignition on to disable the immobilisor

Any ideas anyone??

Oh and what would make the cooling fan run constantly with the fuse in?

Thanks in advance...

did you mean 'what would make the fan run constanlty with the fuse out' ?[;)]

12v+ is sent to through the fuse then through the temp sensor (switch) in the rad then to the fan which is earthed.
When the water temperature in the rad reaches a pre-set temperature the internal switch closes passing 12v+ on to the fan.
With the fuse pulled it shouldn't work unless something is short circuiting along that route.

If the temp stat is faulty it could be stuck in the closed position causing the fan to run continuously even with the ignition off. This is normal operation as the fan is wired direct to the battery

If the engine is hot after a run the fan should run on for a while after you switch the ignition off and leave the car. If it doesn't stop running after 15-20 minutes or so then I would suspect the temp sensor being faulty.

I would also disconect your immobiliser and see if the gremlins clear up. Sounds very much like the immobiliser is not working properly.

My money would be on the immobiliser too, had an Astra years ago that did the same thing, it had failed so it constantly supplied 12v to the circuits it was supposed to cut.

Peanut it is just an issue with the fuse IN, only noticed there wasn't one in when I was checking the other fuses, someone had previously taken the fuse out, guessed it would probably be the temp sensor, just wanted to check there wasn't some other know issue with this.

Looks like one night this week will be taken up by immobilisor faultfinding!

well in that case my guess would be that the previous owner removed the fan fuse because it ran all the time rather than replace the temperature sensor switch or sort the problem with the wiring.
Have you checked to see if the fan comes on when the engine is hot after a run ?
