Sunroof operation

Something's not quite right! The roof should go up and down with the engine on but with the engine off but ignition on the down button allows the legs to be retracted to remove the roof. It sounds as though there is something amiss with the down option - there is a microswitch in the triangular piece at the front of the roof that determines when the roof is fully open and closed and stops the motor - might be an issue here.

Now here is how mine works... after much playing about when the engine is on (1986 944 LUX) if i press up on the dash button the sunroof goes up, if i press down nothing happens, if i turn the engine off (key in electrics still on) and press down the sunroof goes down, if i press up it retracts the aarm to release the sunroof.

Ive replaced the directional relays, all 3 switches in the motor assembly and the motor to get to this point...

Is this how its supposed to work or should it go down when i press down with the engine on?

I'd go for the microswitch on the fromt as well. It's above the rear-view mirror and is designed to stop the motor raising and lowering the arms unless the roof is installed, ensuring that the arms are in the right place when you put it back in. The contact bends over time. Sounds like the only thing you haven't changed!
