Sway Bars

Evening guys,

Probably been asked a thousand times before so sorry foarasking again...but I have tried to find the answer myself with no luck.

Are all of the sway bars the same other than diameter?

A friend has a 26.8mm front and 18mm rear for reasonable money (he can't remember if they for his s2 or turbo) and was wondering if it would go into '83 lux with no issues? And what other bits I'd have to source.

Also, does anyone know if the plastic fuel tanks from later cars are a straight swap for my early steel one? Its starting to corode a little in places and a nice plastic one would be excellent if it fits!

Thanks in advance for any info guys.

Sway bars - Anti-Roll Bars - ARBs are various diameters on the 944 / 968. I beleive the 85 on are different to the early cars, but not totally sure if they will fit - my '83 has 21mm front and 14mm (I think) rear.

Plastics tanks will fit, but it is a real pain - all the lines / wires / fittings are in different places and you need to drop the gearbox as well!

Pretty much what Mikes, says plastic tank conversion is a big job, fuel lines are on the opposite side of the car and go upto the accumulator though a hole that isn't there on the pre '85 cars.

PET list the bars for the pre '85.5 cars as: 944 343 707 00/01 or 944 343 706 00

Post '85.5 are listed as the same plus 944 343 706 02/04/05

933 343 706 05 are the 26.8mm ones and where for the M030 option

Rear 18mm is 477 411 313

Your's came with a 14mm as standard 477 511 411 and if memory serves me correctly switching the back requires some modification to fit the larger ones. Sure they're be someone more clued up on that along shortly

Thanks a lot for the fast replies!

No modifications required, you just need the correct size bushes for them and they will fit. Only problem you might have is with the control arm bushes, those bushes on the early steel arms are not strong enough for the stiffer 26.8 sway bar so it might just pop out.You can solve this problem by getting some polyurethane bushes.I recently installed the same sway bars on my '86 and all i can say is that it's worth every penny, big improvement.
my '83 has 21mm front and 14mm (I think) rear.
They came from factory in these combinations:
20mm front -nothing in the rear
21mm front - nothing in the rear
23mm front -14mm rear
24mm front -14mm rear
25.5mm front -16mm rear (944 M474)
26.8mm front -18mm rear ( 951 M030 )
26.8mm front -16mm rear ( 89-91 turbo's)
30mm front -19mm rear ( 968 M030 )
(20mm and 21mm are solid and the rest are hollow)

As a quick one having installed the 968 M030 bars on my car:

30mm front - has groove for large C clip on it

19mm rear - has 3 holes in it to provide minor adjustment

This allows very quick visual differentiation of the different types/ stiffness of bar.
