Track tyre wear + deposits

So I had a good day at Rockingham on Monday. And this was the result. The picture was taken after a 50 mile drive home, too. I imagine eventually these bits will fall off. My question is - if there were a load of bits like this all over the tyres (front as well but not as bad - this is the back), might it cause a mild vibration which gets worse at speed and under cornering? Otherwise I have to worry that something else happened! Handling seemed unaffected by the vibration.

The tyres are Bridgestone SO2s. Judging by recent posts opinions vary as to whether this sort of problem would still occur with more track focussed tyres. Any tips on tyre pressures to lessen the problem? I tried to run at 32psi hot all around, which had previously served me well. I think I drove a bit harder this time, though.

They will probably wear off pretty quickly, but will cause vibration/noise. with your 32 psi hot how slow were your cool down laps? could they have been hotter when you were out? They are mostly picked up in the centre now which would indicate pressures were too high, but maybe you drove back with them low so wore the outsides first on the way home. Looks like you were trying hard out there though! [:)]

The 32psi was measured when I got back to the pits obviously. I'm pretty strict with the cool down laps in terms of brakes and engine, but perhaps less sympathetic on the tyres. I tend to still go round the corners moderately fast. Sometimes the deposits on the rear were more across the inner half of the tyre. We assumed that this reflects some camber on the rear wheels. It has been set up by Proxmax to have the 'road/track comprpomise' set up.

I was going reasonably steady until I had a few laps with the instructor. He made me go alot faster. It felt good. But then I noticed the vibration. So my tuition session was cut short. After I peeled as much of the extra bits of rubber as I could off, it seemed like the vibrations had subsided somewhat.

It was alot of fun! I can recommend the Rockingham International Long circuit (in the dry - in the morning it was wet and very horrible). At first it seems a bit dull, but with plenty of run off, it's not too hard to relax about the risks and enjoy the day. At least for a numpty like me there's plenty of things to work on getting right.

Not sure this will be the cause - It's pretty common for tyres to end up like that & I have seen a lot worse. I guess they cleaned up a fair bit on the way home.

I would give the car a good check to see if anything is loose - wheel bearings a possibility. You might simply have lost a wheel weight?

Can you replicate the problem off the track? Also worth trying a different set of wheels.

Well... the vibration wasn't bad, and yes they did clean up a bit on the road and I'd already tried to peel most of it off when the tyres were warm. Also, the instructor didn't really notice it until I pointed it out. I've not managed to replicate it off track yet, but if I do I have a spare set of wheels - so swapping them is a good idea.

Wheel bearings - OK. Can do that. And yes, I've thought of wheel weights too. None obviously missing off the outside of the wheels but I should check the insides.

Cheers - a bit of a check list now.
