Rallying 944s

On a thread in another place someone has commented on the possibility of running 944s on road & tarmac rallies. This has led on to the comments that several rally organisers (including the Roger Albert Clark Rally Organisers) are opening up historic rallies (inc gravel) to Pre '87 cars from 2013. Now, it would appear that the 944 was available from late(ish) 1986 so how about someone rallying an early 944????!! RWD fun and (unusually) possibly a lot cheaper to build than it would be to buy a Mk2 Escort! Discuss......

Hi Andy, I rally a 1964 cooper S in the historic series, I'm sure an early 944 would be welcome at most events, but you won't be able to appear in the overall results unless it's a pre '72.

Lots of 356's around though............

I have mentioned here on previous occasions that I would like to be involved in some form of ' lower level' events in a 944. I am though as mentioned a beginner and was thinking of 'fun' rather than seriously competitive events for starters.

Recently I looked in to it some more and was quite disapointed to find that historic rallying generally is in cars prior to December 81 so ruled out the 944. I did consider getting a 924 for the purpose but the only 924 I'd really consider owning is then S which is of course still too young. Doing something for pre 87 cars is good news what ever it is. I suspect this is a bit high end for me but I'd like to be involved even if it was just following or even helping out 'team wise' somehow [;)]

The 944 was available from late 1986?

It was available from late 1981 and Ben has bought obe of the very, very few right hand drive cars. I think that later cars are going to have very limited opportunities to compete, even if this actually happens.

Indeed the oster seems to have totally discounted square dash cars
( good man [8D] )

Most of the web sites state the 944 was available from 82 but I have to admit I have read long ago that there are 81 cars. I even saw 1 ( maybe Bens purchase?)
sell on flea Bay quite some time ago. I assume its the usual story for cars as in
' 82 model year ' but you could get hold of one in 81 ?

I was marginally tempted to buy the one on Flea Bay for rarity/keeper value then I thought hold on Mas you really dislike the square dash [:D]

Arhh, apologies, not sure where I got my 1986/87 rubbish from! I meant 81/82 and confused myself with the ref to pre 87 as opposed to the current Historic Pre 81 cut off. Anyway, if the new "Class 4 Historic" category takes off it means that 2.5 944s and 924S will have a "historic" place to compete & that has to be good news.

Edited to add, and 944 Turbos (220) would presumably be eligible, too!

Andy I totally agree good news for 944 folk , where can I read the details re this please what association or group is publicising it and where ?

Regards Mas

Also mentioned in Motorsport News that the Trackrod rally in Sept will have a Pre 87 class and that the historic committee of the MSA are trying to finalise a suitable pre 87 class specification for 2013 "when it will be trialled in the BHRC and other selected events".

I'm not a rally man myself but this does sound interesting.

I rally a 1964 cooper S in the historic series

My first car was a 998 Cooper. I'd always said I'd have a 1071S but I have no real use for it and the prices are just silly now. Shame really but I think that's one that will get away.

Something like this??

I likey, a lotty!!

That's thefirst time I have liked a set of cookie cutters.Never seen a white set before and they look good. Car looks cool as well. What about rallying a 924 turbo you can get a pre 81 version of that.

My 1985 hillclimber had white centred Cookie Cutters when I bought it. It was an eighties-tastic option on white cars and was popular in the South East. [:D]

Nice !!!!!!!!!!!!! I have always loved the 924 just as much as the 44. A 924 turbo is a well balanced good handling car, probably better than a 44.It's certainly lighter and more nimble than a 44.And you can up the power without having to spend huge sums of cash.

There's a thread about rallying/ racing 924s (Inc turbos) here: http://www.porscheclubgbforum.com/tm.asp?m=539471

"DSCBoy" used one on the Tour Britannia and on the Historic Monte.

Not sure about "not spending much money" though! All comp cars need much money in my experience.

I wonder if the Tour Britannia organisers would consider the new "Class 4" Historic category in their event - a 924S, 944 or 944T (220) would be fantastic in that.

This was why I was trying to buy a series one 924 Turbo last year. I have a matched pair of Heuer stopwatches ready to go, and everything! [:D]
