£350 OIL LEAK was actually £14!!!

Took my car for its first MOT since owning it a week ago and it failed on many thing (as suspected) E.G: Wheel bearing, power steering leak, oil leak, wing mirror, bulbs etc. The MOT station referred me to an amazing Porsche specialist in West London called Xavier who fixed all of these problems, along with the cold start sensor, a hand brake adjust and a new fan switch plus a new MOT all for little more than £900. The dearest thing was the power steering pump which was leaking, any way the car is driving like a completely different car (mainly due to the cold start sensor i think). Anyway my reason for the post is to say that i am surprised that 3 different garages quoted me between £350 and £700 to fix the oil leak when this new guy instantly spotted it being the oil switch which controls the gauge on the dash which cost around £14 and took a few minutes. This leak has caused me so many problems, not to mention a fortune in oil. It really makes you wonder whether normal garages see us coming and instantly over-price the work because they don't want to work on the cars as they don't understand them or automatically assume we are have a nice car and are therefore willing to pay well over the odds for work.

Anyone else experienced this?

Yes, pretty much every time I go to a garage I used to get it, lucky now that have a few people I can ask who I trust and since all the over inflated prices I used to get, I'm in agreement with you that its either they don't know and give you a price just based on the fact "well its a Porsche its bound to be expensive" (ie. they have no idea)
Or the old chesnut of well you've got a Porsche so you must have a few quid and know screw all about cars!

I'm sure there are some unscrupulous mechanics around, but I think it's more likely that they just don't know what they're doing. "When in doubt, quote the worst-case" seems to be the way they work. []

yes my first 944 Lux . I took it to Oaktree Garage . for 500 mile check and retighten of new belts which had been fitted by Paragon Motors the previous month along with an exchange engine.
When i got back to the garage they had replaced the belts without my permission and showed me some old knackered belts which i assumed were off another motor .
Parragon assured me that the belts had been replaced and I had a copy of the work carried out . Couldn't prove anything but the whole experience left a very nasty taste in my mouth as I had been recommended to them by the club. I assume that there was a breakdown in communication and the belts got replaced rather than checked

They also pointed out a small oil leak and said it needed a new steering pump. I refused because i had already been charged more than double the original quote.

When I got home and checked it was a small weep from under the reservoir which took 10 seconds to tighten a jubilee clip with a screwdriver .
