£5750 for a boxster??

Ok OK it's a few years old but so am I..

I saw a Boxster on Auto trader, infact I saw two both for sub £6k 1998/9 models 2.5 engines

so what's what for a sub £6k car

are they bad or are they a good buy both had about 80-100k on the clock and looked ok

are the engines good? body work to look for?
has to be a no older than 2000 car as it's a toy

well they were 9k at the start of the year before the world went pear shaped so wouldn't be suprised.

Some nice S for sale at 10k.

TBH if you want to sell at the minute you have to be prepared to take anything! Eek.

Don't see why it would be a scam? A leggy early Boxster in poor spec with patchy history has to be worth a lot less than a good later S. The prices are falling through the floor, don't go by the advertised price of cars as they are often over-valued and don't sell.

Cheap Boxsters were all over the place for around £10k over the last year, as pointed out above. If you really needed to sell a below-average car at the moment then it has to be worth less than £5k? [&o]

Of course, a cheap Porsche is an oxymoron. It's still better to pay a bit more for a better car than buy a box of problems, and well-cared for cars have been dragged down as well.

wouldnt say a scam at all, and i dont think they will be "Leggy" or poor condition either, they are likely to be good spec and good condition, the price reflects what realistically they are worth.
I predicted the 6K Boxster just over 18 months ago - only i said within three years they will be going for 6K.

Lets be honest - times are tough
credit crunch
unemployment
rising insurrance
Massive hike in fuel prices (though a temporary lull at the moment)
Car tax next year
The Porsche common faults - alarms, roof, creaks ratles, water ingress, self lowering windows, oil leaks, brake discs, CELs, AOS, wheel bearings, gearchange
The crap OPCs
Parts prices

An 11 year old car selling for 6K is still very good - indeed you can purchase a normal small family car almost new for this and something like a KIA with a 7 year warranty must be attractive to small car buyers.
The 6K market will satisfy the boy racers and those that always wanted a Porsche but couldnt quite justify the outlay.

All things considered i dont think its a bad thing there is a market to pass these cars on to, after all most 3 year old Porsches have had two or three owners, personally i dont know why they dont keep them longer - but perhaps that is one reason Porsche dont need to give any more than a two year warranty as the original owner will have passed it on long before warranty runs out, more money than sense?

just traded my Boxster in - 03, 986, perfect condition, genuine 13500miles, FSH, full leather, 18" alloys, psm, elec seats and a few other minor extras - got a whopping £13300 [:(]

Tried to sell privately - only one offer at £14000 but too much hassle - at this point these things are only worth what they should be if you have the people to buy them and those people aren't really around. Mine should've got me £17000 easily but for all those greedy bankers.

And if you think that's bad I've traded in for an almost new Verso diesel and had to add 2K for the privilege. I'm still in shock - one of those things where I had no choice due to change of circumstances.

If anyone wants to soften the blow slightly, I've got a Wilhemy soft-top module for a 986 going cheap - say £50 ono [:)] Might at least allow me to drown my sorrows on Saturday when I wave her goodbye.

There was a nice looking S on autotrader the other day for 8.5K so IMHO 6 grand for a 2.5 is not cheap at all. Times are really bad. My dad had to sell his van when it became impossible to make money any more from his business. ISTR loosing something like 1/2 the value of the van in 10 months. Bought this time last year for 7.5K sold a little while back for 3.5K.

Punch 6K to 7K into the advanced search option on autotrader and see what pops up, quite an eye opener.

Just a quick word of warning: buying a cheap performance car is the easy bit: actually running and maintaining it is where the fun starts unless you want to make some serious compromises. For example, do you really want to to run on anything other than decent quality oil? 9 litres of good stuff for an oil change is going to be £60/£70+. And then there are still a number of items that are only supplied by Porsche (how about a new key plus programming at £150) or an ABS sensor at £98? How about two Michelin rear tyres at £440?
I'm not trying to be a party pooper here but go into any Porsche purchase with your eyes wide open.

I take your point but you need to shop around.
ABS sensor for Boxster £51.88 plus VAT from Eurocarparts.
My set of 4 Michelin PS2 for my Boxster cost £542 for all four from Costco.

Going back to Ken's question, what spec are they? Aircon, stereo speakers, 17" alloys, leather, etc?
What kind of condition? Can you tell from the ad?

Mine is a '97 and is still in pretty good nick. The aircon radiators go (look through the front bumpers), my door leaks and needs a new membrane, the variocam solenoids can go, coil packs pack in if old enough, RMS can be a problem, might need a clutch, etc. etc. Bodywork should be fine, although there may be stonechips on the bumper (like mine). You'd need to go and have a look really.

Paul, I felt quite gutted when you mentioned that an ABS sensor was available so cheaply from Euro Car Parts: I feel better now that I realise they only fit the 2.5 and not my 3.2 - I hate paying too much for my parts!

You're right about needing to have a very good look at the car though - I suspect there is a world of difference between a good one and a duffer.
I just wonder how low these Boxster prices will go... I reckon there's still some way to go before they hit rock bottom.

Well some interesting feed back there. I was looking out of interest for the wife to try out a Porsche, I have a few and she is not a fan of mine but she liked the boxster when it first came out and bought a BMW Convertable instead. But now I fancy buying her one for a fun car. So if it has high miles now in 2 years it will even out abit.

I am not going to rush out and buy one but ask you guys about the spec's of early boxsters I don't mind the 2.5 if the engine is reliable. Speed is not the issue here just enjoyment. So what did early boxsters have spec wise?

I can't see the boxster going for under £4000 for a few years yet, most of them seam to be in good condition and worthy of their money still. Sure service costs will bite if you get an OPC to do the work but then if you are that way in your service ways then your used to having your pants pulled down and a swipe with the visa card..

What I guess I am asking also is. Is the Boxster a car that can be worked on DIY. Is there alot of Tec data out there to show how to fix common faults? If so I am interested in buying one.. I will take a look at Auction over the christmas period as prices will reflect the mood of the markets there. So for fun I will put £4000 to one side and see what I can find

But you guys tell me about the levels of spec to look for I am happy with basic..

its defiently do able to get a boxster for between 5.5 and 6k, theres a few on the autotrader if your keep an eye on it.
they do seem to sell fairly quickly under 6k, just been watching them for the past few weeks.
i am prob going to wait until end of december or early january to buy one, i reckon you may get some desperate trader or private seller to part with one for 5k at this time of the year and with such a 'credit crunch' there are bargains to be had! :)

I did own a 2.5 99 boxster last year, and really loved it, but it was too nice to track day etc... only had done 50k miles with full porsche history, should have really kept it, as it was a very nice clean example, but had to trade it in to get a more usable car. :(

Great cars, even the 2.5 has plenty of poke! depends what you are used to, but i found it a nice balance of power and superb handling.

Get a good one and you will love it!

JW,

Is your Wilhemy module a 986a (pre-2000) or 986b (post 2000)?

£50 is fine if its the right model and you pay the postage.

I just had a glass rear screen replacement top fitted so no longer need to get out to fold the plastic.

Phone 01865 730588 to sort out.

Regards,

Jerry
