02 reg boxster issues I should be aware of

Hi everyone 1st post .. Going to buy a Porsche boxster s and wondering if there's any issues I should be aware of as I'm not mechanically minded ..yet.. It's an 02, reg and has 43000 miles , just worried I buy it and then have to open wallet big time -- your help is much appreciated

I would be very cautious, I bought a 04 37k miles 1 owner from new, and it started to make an engine noise after owning it for 850 miles, after an oil change there was metal debris found in the oil, this car has now been shipped via truck to Hartech for an engine strip to find out why!

This will not be cheap!

I would not rush into any purchase before getting the car inspected by a specialist it could be the best £100 spent .No idea as to where you stay .No doubt others will recommend people in your area and do not discount your local official Porsche centres .The service book is a starting reference as to how the car has been looked after ,like you have no mechanical knowledge .The Boxster is a great car and i am on my 3rd one .There is plenty around believe me so take your time the right one will have your name on it [;)]

I went through the same doubts when I bought my Boxster 18 months ago. I read the alarming reports about IMS bearings, and so on.

Like you, I had always wanted to have a Porsche, and made the fatal mistake of driving my mate's car.

Anyway, I bought a car from within the OPC network, and have not regretted it for a second. Get the car, and join PCGB. You know it makes sense.

I bought my 02 Boxster S in 2010 a low mileage ( 32,000mls) in August 2010 and now some 3 years later still on 35000 mls haven't regetted it at all wonderful car. incidently bought it private from a guy in Pimlico.

Martin

Few people ever have any serious issues, my first Boxster was a 97 2.5 - didnt bother looking at anything online before purchase - decided i will take it like i would any other car and after 5 years it had cost me peanuts to maintain, Its only when you come online and hear about IMS that the paranoia starts.
Second Boxster a 2002 3.2, no serious issues over the next 4 years or so with it.

Lots of scare stories out there but if the service record is all intact and everything looks and sounds about right - and - it drives very well then i feel there is little else you can do.
Sure you can have an inspection done but that still wont tell you a great deal more than you could establish yourself, though it would identify structural issues, worn bushes etc - but that is not where the really expensive stuff is - that is the preserve of the engine and gearbox, so if it drives good, sounds good and gear changes are slick then its likely to be fine. Second gear does tend to baulk when cold on most of these cars (except the 5 speed boxes) but im not sure if thats a problem as most of us simply change gear a little slower from 1st to second when its all cold - once warmed everything works fine.
