04 model year 2 yr servicing...?

I see that 04 model year cars need servicing every 2yrs or 12k miles as opposed to annual or 12k.

Anyone know what was changed, and whether it's practical to modify any 3.6l cars to 04my spec?

Might help to offset the £450 road fund licence []

All that was done for MY04 was to fit a heavier duty battery! I can't for the life of me think why that would change the service schedule. Most likely a marketing exercise.

I dont actually understand why there is a difference.

I had a 2002 C4S and now have a 2005 C4s (both 996's) and the newer car has the two year service intervals rather than the earlier cars one year.

Nobody can tell me the difference in cars (I havent actually seen my battery on this or the last car) but I cant see that a stronger battery will make a difference.

The main thing to note is that although the fixed service intervals have changed, some things still need to be done (fluids?) I havent got my service things here at work, but I am sure that I was told that some things needed checking even if the car didnt need a proper service. I find the whole thing a bit of a con as something almost always needs doing anyway, fixed servicing or not.

I thought, in general, that the reason that service lifes have become longer is down to improvements in oil technology.

i.e by 2004 newer oils had been tested and proven by Porsche to last longer, so longer service intervals could be introduced.

i have a 997s 54 plate and my servicing is every 2yrs or 20k miles...i cud be wrong but servicing on 997"s was made every 2 yrs but still every year on 996 models.....may help i dont know.....

Porsche just seemed to introduce this service fiasco as we called it in the opc at the time because sales were all over the place with it as well as service advisors going "eh what".... i dont know if they did it in line with everyone else changin to longer service intervals or to keep maintenance costs down for the owner only Porsche know its just a shame they dont extend the warranty cover to 3 or 4 years instead of the 2 you get now

improvemements in oils and materials (especially surface technology) have reduced the
servicing requirements of most modern cars

There are apparently no mechanical changes at all between earlier 996's and post 2004 models. It's simply that Porsche decided that the service intervals were too close and so extended them on later models. The only real problem for earlier models is that, in order to maintain a full service history, you still need to have the service every 12 months as per the maintenance book. We all know how important the service history is on these cars, I wouldn't touch one without a fully stamped book!

My C4S is a 2003 model year, sold to me as a 2005 which missed its first 2 services! Amazingly the dealer is still claiming it has a full service history, we'll see what the judge decides on June 25th!

On consideration, I reckon its worth a new sump-worth of oil and a filter a year for a car like that.

One also wonders about other bits that get neglected too given the cars' less frequent trips for service.

I have a04 996 C2 Cab and have been told by the dealer not to get anything done at 12 months.......saying that 12K miles comes at about 18 months anyway.............
