Please could you mark your diaries.

QUESTIONS:-
Does Optimax really work ?
How does BP Ultimate compare with Optimax ?
Do we really need Super Unleaded in our high performance cars ?
Do detergents actually work or must I get the injectors cleaned every few years ?
Are all supermarket fuels the same (low?) quality ?
Does my car go "better" on 99 RON fuel ?
Why is petrol so expensive compared to other regions of the world ?(I think we know that one actually !)

SOLUTIONS
I'm sure we have all asked some or all of these questions - internally, or in a discussion, in recent years. Well as a result of a meeting I had with a Global Fuels Technology Leader from BP, We have been able to secure a presentation by 2 members of BP's Technology group to Region 10 at the regular MK & Northants regional meeting September 11th @ the Navigation Inn - Stoke Bruerne

For a map, click here

If you attend, you can get all these questions and any others you may have about that most crucial driving ingredient - fuel - answered during a 1hr presentation + Q&A session with 2 of the industries leading experts.

The presentation will start from ~7:15pm (prompt) so do try to arrive at least 15 minutes early.

Initial reaction is that this will be a very well subscribed event from R10, but it's likely to be opened up to other regions for the collective benefit.

Kind Regards

Steve

My questions are just hypothetical...(OK, I'm sure you may have asked them too) so I hadn't planned to post answers here.

If you are in any way curious, perhaps you might like to post any questions here and I'll try to get them answered / posted.

(Of course..you are welcome to join the meeting but respect the distance issue)

Sounds like a good evening to infiltrate from R24.

I'm going to try and make it.

Unfortunately for me, I had a 12 hour drive yesterday and didn't get back home till a little late, so missed the do at the Navi'.

What was the outcome?

Could it be summarised here?

A belated "Thank you" to Steve for organising the attendance of John Williams from BP. It was an illuminating talk - causing some debate amongst those who attended.

Next month is quiz night - 9 October [:)]

.....Heptane, Mon, Ron, Iso-Octane, Di-Methyl Bri-hexolyeane..97, 98....stochiometric, lambda, flame propogation, animal...mineral or vegetable...tesco 99ron...Optimax

Questions is:- does it make my Porsche run better ?

I will drop a note to John thanking him and BP

This was (perhaps people didn't realise this) the first time they had ever done this type of presentation to a car club. Given the debate going on in the 997 forum about "which fuel" and other threads, I thought we would have packed the pub out with interested Porsche people....

In any case, if there are questions, it seems they are willing to stand up and try to answer them

Could it be summarised here?

Easy.

"Try BP Ultimate. It might well make your car faster, more economical, produce less emissions and cost you more money. Side effect might also be that as it's less popular than 95, it will be the last fuel to run out in the event of a fuel crisis."

Of course, there were many hundreds of interesting tips from BP...but too complex to summarise easily. I'm going to get hold of his presentation and perhaps circulate if people are interested.

It was an interesting talk Steve, well done for getting it organised.

I was hoping to come away convinced that I could use BP as an alternative to Shell but I think I'll be sticking with Optimax - assuming there's any left!

Did anyone see Fifth Gear last night?

They compared regular 95 octane with Optimax and BP Ulitmate in several different cars on a rolling road.

There was little if any difference on the "shopping car" but Optimax was significantly better than BP on a Subaru WRX. Makes nonsense of BPs marketing strategy.

It's a shame they didn't try the new Tesco 99 octane to see if that was an improvement over 98. It looks promising and claims to have the cleaning properties too if you can believe the manufacturer"¦

and it's available in MK now...

[FONT=verdana, geneva"]Coincidentally, I ran into John Barker from EVO magazine while at Weltmeister Silverstone having some minor work done to my 993.

He had a BMW M5 on their dyno testing various fuels so will be interesting to see the results in a future edition of EVO - forgot to ask him when - DOH [8|]

Interestingly the M5 which is nominally rated at around 500bhp was comfortably producing over 530 and getting stronger with each run [:-] !!! Not sure on which fuel.....
