12 year service due

The Boxster S is due for its 12 year service ( and the garage liken this to a 120K major major service) ... Its only done 57K miles and is a beauty and well cared for (i.e. garaged)

The previous owner who owned from new had done a reasonable job of servicing the car every 2 years like clockwork. The service book is fully stamped, but no receipts of what actually got changed (only what the garage are prepared to tell me which was brakes & exhaust bolts being rusty which being careful with his ££'s he hadn't replaced)

Having owned it for 8 months, it has been great and I used the local independent to replace timing tensioner washer and the exhaust bolts. Plus I changed the rear discs & pads myself. Kept all the receipts.

Now the question is do I spend best part of a grand (still waiting for a quote form the indi) to get the full service ( Oil n filter, sparks, gearbox oil changed, Air filters and Aux belt) done at an independent and avoid the hassle plus get the book stamped? and maybe keep the price up. Or, being handy do it myself? I don't mind doing the work, probably take way longer to complete but I enjoy a challenge. There's even a garage 10 miles away that rents out a lift.

Question, Would I really devalue the car be doing this myself? I've serviced my previous cars (Beamers, Audis, Volvo's, Saabs) and no one seemed that bothered and trusted what I'd done. Difference being this is a quality sports car and I plan to keep it for a few years - thoughts?

BTW anyone changed gearbox oil on a 987? was the sump plug magnetic?

Chuck

2006 Boxster could be internal IMS
Whats it worth 10-11k?
I believe if you know what you are doing you will do a better job than an indy. What about getting an OPC to do a major 499.00 including VAT Make sure they us Shell Helix 5 30 or 40 (Helps the IMS) less 10% POCGB discount
Then do the other work yourself , Drop the PU and clear out the crap between the Condensors and radiators (2 screws per side!!)
Make sure the 4 drain holes around the battery are clear and the two under the Roof
Other work as you suggest.
Make sure you add what you do to the service book - OPC service will look good
Hopefully OPC service will draw your attention to what "NEEDS" to be done
I do all my own work as I know its done properly

OPC in Reading looks expensive from £685 and Rsj in slough is about £600 including sparks and vat.
Gearbox oil does need replacing which is POA item at RSJ and brake fluid is extra.

Its a 2007, and will be 12 in January, so no ims.

I had cleaned out rads, removed the PU at the front and put in the sun guard mesh, drainage all clear.

Cars worth about 12k. Maybe use the opc but looks pricey And if Boxster prices still drop will never get the return when selling in a few years. Talking myself into doing it....

Chuck,

The DIY versus Porsche Centre/Independent debate is always tricky. Enthusiasts probably wouldn't worry unduly on a 12-year old car but those who aren't in the know would, I imagine, prefer to see a complete service record, so at the end of the day it's your choice.

Everything you mentioned is doable by a competent mechanic. Keep all the receipts of course.

By the way, if it's a 2007 car then it will have the IMS engine.

Good luck..!

Jeff

Get the major service done by indi £310 +v at Northwards. !! Do the rest yourself keep the receipts for the parts etc.

Ps they charge Spark plugs £145, drive belt £70, brake fluid £70 all plus vat at Northwards, makes it £714 inc vat plus gearbox oil

True, it does have IMS... although 2007 has the bigger bolt ... as per this article, https://rennlist.com/foru...-987-ims-failure.html:

Boxsters from 2006 thru 2008 have the newer larger IMSB which seems to be more trouble free than the earlier models.
The 987.1 (1st generation) were 2005-2008. Early 2005 987 Boxsters were built with the older bearing with the change to the newer bearing happening sometime during the late 2005 model year.

Will check Northwoods - good shout
