12K Service - no oil filter change

I'm getting my first 12K service in a couple of weeks from the West London OPC. They charge nearly a hundred quid to change the oil but don't change the oil filter. This surprises me as when 'I was a lad' and serviced my own cars, I always changed the oil filter when the oil was changed.

My understanding of the function of the oil filter is that it removes residue from the oil. Thus, if Porsche mandate that the oil is not fit for purpose after 12K miles and must be changed then I would imagine that the oil filter is also not fit for purpose.

Needless to say, I had to request that the oil filter be changed as well and I will be charged around 45GBP for this request (parts and 0.2 hours of labour + VAT) on top of the cost of the 12K service.

Is this a flaw in the Porsche service schedule?

Very odd. I've never heard of any manufacturer changing oil, but not the filter. I cannot believe this is a Porsche recommendation. I think the garage must have this wrong.

£45 for a filter change ... phew!

John, this is true. I specifically asked the question. The service admin person at Porsche Centre West London went to ask the service manager and he confirmed that the oil filter is not part of the basic service! I was gobsmacked and told that I would have to fork out 18GBP for the oil filter + 0.2 hours of labour + VAT. I think all that works out to around 45 notes give or take a few quid.

Porsche is the first manufacturer that I have known not to change the oil filter when changing the oil. This is simply daft as if the oil filter is knackered then the fresh oil will be useless.

I will be giving Porsche GB Customer Relations a call about this when the holidays are over unless someone else on here knows why Porsche don't change the oil filter.

Sadly this reminds me of another story. At every service on my wife's Golf (Mk4, 1.4S, bought new, one lady owner) I asked the service people when it was due a new cam-belt. At the 60k service I even made them look it up, but they assured me, like I was some sort of moron, that of course it did not need a belt change.

3,000 miles later it broke, and caused over £1,000 worth of damage. I eventually got VW to pay half, but do you think they aplologized, or agreed to review their service requirements? No chance!

I am concerned that manufacturers are starting to cheapskate in some areas, to make their service costs lower. I hope this isn't another example of the above!

Reminds me of a story from when I was dealing with a fleet deal for a company I worked for a few years ago. We told the lease company that the that the Vectra's cost more than their competitors for the life of the vehicle because the service intervals were shorter. Guess what they did? Yep, extend the service intervals to match the rival with absolutely no change to the cars or the service procedures.

Guys,

Rumba is correct, my C4S is at Chiswick for its 1st annual and having read this I just checked, oil filter change is not scheduled for the 1st year. Just instructed them to do it.

Regards

I also had to pay extra to have the oil filter changed at my recent 12k service at JCT 600 Brooklands. Total service cost was £202 inc VAT but excluding oil which I supplied myself. This more or less saved the cost of the filter change - Mobil 1 0w40 in Costco is about £6.99 a litre. Halfords do it as well but it is more expensive. JCT told me that I would need 9 litres but used only 8. I've kept the extra litre for topping up.

Hi
I recently had the major service which does include an oil filter change but they are right, according to the service book no oil filter change at "minor service" intervals

This has been discussed before - Porsche do not specify a filter change until 24K miles. Most seem to get them to do it anyway... (I had not realised an extra 0.2 of an hour was being charged though!)

Very strange as I read an article in the last year or so that synthetic oils like Mobil 1 are good for 50000 miles between changes but the weak link in the chain has always been the oil Filter! So not changing the filter but changing the oil seems to be like puting the cart before the horse (power)[;)]

Absolutely Rob!

The oil is very stable, but any impurities that sneak in degrade the efficiency of the oil, maybe that is why Porsche change the oil, but designed the filter to last longer?

I always change both at the same time though...
