Hi,

I have a 997 C2S with about 89k, had it for over a year and the clutch, despite being a bit grabby and heavy, was always fine with no slipping and gearbox perfect.

I had the clutch replaced by a well-known specialist a few weeks back (along with a stack of other work) before a 2.5k road trip across Europe.

Initially the new clutch felt sweet. Light, smooth and progressive.

Same day it seemed to get a little heavier and heard and felt a click from the pedal when depressed which happened for most of the trip.

I had a water pump problem in France, was recovered to the UK and the same garage replaced the water pump and I got it back last week.

To replace the water pump they dropped the engine and box a little for access.

Thanks for any intel and advice in advance.

Sorry to hear about your woes Rob. Since you didn't experience any problems prior to the clutch swap, I'd firstly get your specialist to check that the gearlever cables have been reconnected properly to the gearbox, just to ensure that the ball joints are fully engaged and that the cables are attached to their brackets. If everything is OK and the mechanism is adjusted correctly then unfortunately it may be necessary to start looking at the gearbox itself (a faulty 6th gear detent?). I wonder if the click you hear/feel when operating the clutch pedal is due to the clutch slave cylinder being loose or some play associated with the clutch throwout mechanism? Whatever the cause of your problem(s), I think that a trip back to your specialist is advisable for further investigation. Hope that's of help. Jeff

Thanks for the info Jeff, Not having much luck with car :( I had a 996 C2 Tip for 10 years, took it to 130,000 with plenty of track work and it was great. Had this 997 for 1 year, already done £6k on it and as I mentioned the water pump packed up on the penultimate day of our honeymoon.. :( Saying that, up until then I had done 2,500 miles driving from London to Genoa (ferry to Palermo in Sicily) then driving around Sicily and up Italy via Amalfi Coast, Venice and through France. I have a post on another section of the forum I need to update with a mini blog and some great photos. Anyway, thanks for the info... I will contact the garage. Pic attached coming down from Mount Etna in Sicily... AMAZING roads and scenery!

A pity about the water pump Rob, but a known problem on 9X7 series cars. And yours is high mileage too, so it was probably on the way out if it hadn't been replaced previously. Such a shame it happened while you were abroad, but good to hear that it was at the end of a very enjoyable trip rather than at the start. Thinking again about your 6th gear problem, as you say it's unusual to find a gearbox jumping out of gear on constant light throttle, particularly in such a high gear. Normally it happens throttle-on/throttle-off in 2nd or 3rd gear on the over-run due to the large torque reversal. Lets's hope it's something cheap and simple to fix. Jeff

Thanks Jeff. I forgot to mention. the car was recovered from France and arrived back a week early. Only problem is one of the transporter guys used the rear suspension to either pull the car or tie it down. When it was delivered to the garage the NSR wheel was sticking out at an angle as the read coffin arm (?) was snapped completely. You could see the clean marks around the arm where it was tied down / dragged. The same on the offside. Lucky it snapped - if it had fractured for instance I could be driving around a bend and it would have snapped whilst driving. So very dangerous - life threatening even. The frustrating this is it was just delivered and the guilty part must have known what happened but didn't log it or own up. Suffice to say the rescue company (Britannia - UK & European car recovery came free with my Nationwide bank account) were first class all the way from recovering me in France, arranging taxi's and hire car, arranged to pay for a replacement on both sides and geo again.
