16 Day Holiday -- Disconnect Battery?

Hello all

I am new to this forum and hope someone might be able to help. I recently purchased a 2007 997 Turbo. I am off to hols for 16 days and am wondering if I should disconnect the battery to prevent it to go dead during my absence. In my former cars (non-Porsches), two weeks was no issue with the battery and I only disconnected it in winter. What's the verdict on the 997 batteries? Safer to disconnect? And if so, any advice related to that?

I agree with Clive. Do Not Disconnect the battery!
Smart charger is the best answer. I have one for my 911 Carrera 4S Conv. that I use only in the summer and the battery never failed.
 
Thanks Clive -- that would be the ideal solution but I forgot to mention in my original post that the car is not in a garage at the moment, so a charger is not an option. With that clarified, what's the verdict?
 
If the battery is fully charged it should hold its charge for 16 days. Ensure plug in units to the 12v sockets are disconnected, such as TomTom etc.
It also helps to leave the doors unlocked, if parked in a secure place

 
I have a gen2 4s and as I work away the car regularly sits outside for over 2 weeks without being driven. Only issue I have noticed is key loses lock unlock remote function so you need to open the door with the key and everything is back to normal after you start the car. Think remote function stops after 7 days.
 
Another option is to purchases a solar panel 30w and a solar battery charge controller and then the battery will always be charged and ready to go without mains power.
 
Even if you're able to do it, I wouldn't leave the car unlocked.

After 7-days the system goes into a low power mode and can be reactivated by pulling the door handle; the key remote control is then active.

As you are a little wary of leaving for 16 days. Just make sure you drive in the preceding day or two for your own peace of mind. Batteries last way more time nowadays with the power save mode, than the 3 weeks we used to get in the air cooled cars.

You could connect into some solar energy. The caravan brigade have some good products for charging batteries without mains power.

If the battery is up to scratch, it may hold up for the duration if fully charged before you go. The central locking function will turn off automatically after a few days to save juice and you will then have to use the key in the door lock.

Alternatively, line up a friend with a good battery and some jump leads for when you return! [:D]

If it's a 997 then you might just get 16 days out of it if battery is fully charged. If you can leave the front boot unlocked so if the battery does go flat you can easily get to it....
 
If the car is kept outside, a solar charger connected to the cigarette lighter socket would be ideal.

Halfords sell them for about £15.00. They don't regulate like a CTEK battery conditioner or equivalent but if you buy a low wattage one I would think that it would be safe and not overcharge the battery.

Would be interested to understand if overcharging would be a potential issue with a simple solar charger.
 
Thanks everyone! I ended up going with a AA solar trickle charger that connects to the EOBD socket and allegedly keeps the battery at ideal charge without over-charging it. It was super easy to connect and if it works as advertised, a great option. Will let you know how I get on when I get back!
