17" 0r 18" Wheels

I am considering replacing my 18" wheels with smaller 17" to allow for a higher profile tyre which in theory reduce the tyre noise.

Has anyone tried this and with what success?

What tyre noise ? What tyres are you running ? I would stick with 18's. 17's look to small IMO.

Stick with the 18" wheels. The look is far nicer!

You shouldn't be getting road noise to this degree???!!!

As you just bought it go straight back to dealer and scream and shout!

All 911's that I have owned, have and do suffer from tyre noise, it is just to what degree you accept it.

The worst tyres for it I have found have been Michelin, however they are better on mileage.

Pirelli I found to be the queitist and my car currently has Bridgestone rear and Michelin front which again I like all 4 to be one make so I will be changing them quite soon.

The reason I asked about 17" wheels is many years ago I ran 911 sc's which were available as non sport and sport the later had lower profile tyres, much more grip and much more noise, the non-sport higher profile tyres good grip less noise and much more comfort.

I am sure like many other 911 owners I would run out of talent long before our cars ran out of grip so comfort is important to me when touring.

Just a thought

I've had several sets of Michelins on this and previous cars and not had a problem with noise

I have 17" ... was concerned about ride quality on our poor suffolk roads - a quick chat with Peter Morgan suggested 17" would be more compliant than 18", so that's what I have. Haven't noticed any abnormal tyre noise with 17" ones (I run PS2's) and, of course, the replacement tyre cost is less.

I noticed you said you had 2 brands of tyres on your car I though this was a no no
I run 17 on my Boxster and the rears where needing replaced and Porsche said I could not mix NI and NO on the car and as far as makes was told they had to be all the one make ,hence I now have a near new set of fronts Conti Sport 2 205/55 ZR 17 91Y which I cannot use as rears are not made in NO rating anymore

I have 18"s on a C2 996, when I bought it it had Michellin's all round, I changed to Pirelli P Zero Rossos at the end of last year. The car is much quiter at all speeds but it feels a little "twitchier" over bumps at speed. I am amazed at the difference.
