17" Boxster S wheels

I've only got the beautiful but puny and hard to clean 16" Boxster wheels and was thinking of upgrading.

Question: Are the 17" 996 "cup" alloys exactly the same as the 17" boxster alloys that seem to be on most 2.7 Boxsters? Will they fit my 2.5 without any problems? Are the 996 wheels the same part number as the 986 17" cup alloys?

Thanks in advance.

don't know but i have a spare set of original porsche 17" 996 C4 alloys if you are interested - 7's on front and 9's on back

Are they the same as the Boxsters 17" wheels? I want the car to have all original Boxster accessories. Call me a purist...

If they are, please pm me with a price.

Some expert will confirm but I believe that the 996 and Boxster wheels have different offsets. I have a set of 17" Boxster wheels with good Bridgestone S02 tyres that I need to get around to selling. I'm near Glasgow. Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks for the offer Alex. I wish I'd have known earlier!

Hmm. I've got the PDF file that basically explodes the boxster into every part. Looking at the wheels it seems all pre-2000 models' wheels (16" and 17") part numbers begin with 996. Does this mean these were exactly the same wheels as used on the pre-2000 996?

I've just purchased some 17" wheels second hand. The guy who sold them said in his discription that they were off his 1999 Boxster. They look identical to the sale literature from 1998, but the part numbers start with 996, not 986.

According to the technical manual, this is absolutely correct. (PORSCHE E_986_KATALOG.pdf, page 132 of 419 if you have the pdf file).

All a bit confusing, wouldn't you say?

I may be wrong but I don't believe that any 996 came with 16" wheels.

Time to call the dealer perhaps?

I don't doubt that for a second, but the numbers still start with 996. Perhaps the numbers were harmonised in the early days of the 986 and 996.

I believe that Boxster 17" (for 986 at least) are:

7J x 17 55.0mm offset front - 205/50 ZR 17 tyres
8.5J x 17 50.0mm offset rear - 255/40 ZR 17 tyres

The 996 17" rears are 9" wide so are different although they may fit. The offset is stamped on the wheel. I think it says ET55 etc so as long as your wheels say that they should be genuine ex Boxster.

Thanks and what an excellent site! My wheels are called "996/Boxster 17"" and the subscript says "Introduced as optional on 1997 Boxster; standard on 996 from 1999-2001"

So they look genuine after all and one and the same wheel on both models. I'll still check out the ET number AD. Thanks.
