17" Cup 1 alloys

I need to get some new tyres for my wheels as mine are coming up to the legal limit. Currently I have 225/45/17 on the front and 255/40/17 on the rear. They are on Porsche Cup 1 alloys. Is there any value in these wheels? I like them but wouldn't have an issue going back to the correct wheels for year of manufacture and am trying to work out if its worth selling these wheels and getting the correct wheels and tyres.

If there is no cost saving I will stay with the cup 1's. I have worke dout that its about £400 to replace the four tyres!

Cup 1s are a very popular wheel so they will have some value for certain.

However IIRC you have a 1984 944, which means you have an early offset non ABS car, and I don't believe Porsche made a Cup 1 wheel for the early offset cars, so they are more than likely replicas. Perhaps somebody else can confirm or deny.

However there are still plenty of early 944s out there and I am sure you'll have no troubling moving them on if you need/want to.

They have some pretty impressive spacers to make them sit out in the arches.. Anyway to identify them as original Porsche items?

Im trying to balance the fact that I need to spend money on it, compared to what its currently worth in parts [&o]

Although I have a feeling its going to get sorted for its MOT (it needs some welding, a new exhaust and new tyres, but after that its not in need of anything! I bought it cheap due to the short MOT and uhh interesting silicone in the sills!

Genuine Cups will have the width and offset stamped either side of the air valve (something like 7.5 and 55 or 9 and 55)

Genuine ones will have a lot of value and in good nick with decent tyres can go for well over £500 on Ebay if you get a few people bidding.

Replicas can still be bought brand new for £500 but are heavier and have a more 'square' appearance to the edge of the spoke. Used sets can go for £250 - £300

I'd guess they are replicas but a close-up shot of the valve will show whether the numbers for width and offset are cast into the rim either side of the stem. Should be 7.5, 65(F) and 9, 55 (R) if they're off a 968.

If you've got large spacers then that suggests that your offsets are larger than that required for your car, assuming my understanding of offsets is correct. That may mean you have wheels which would fit the later cars with ABS that need an offset of 55mm or thereabouts.

The simplest way is to take the wheel off and see what's stamped on the back. Genuine Porsche wheels have the key information either side of the valve, but if like mine, they've been refurbed, those numbers can now be missing.

Well the wheels will be coming off soon for tyres anyhow.. They have been refurbed at some point in their life and there are no numbers around the valves.. SO maybe replicas or maybe refurbed originals.. Hey ho I like them anyhow so have decided to go head with new tyres, the welding work and possibly a respray down the line (same colour obviously)..

Its just too good to drive :D
