17" or 18" alloys on 944 year 1988

I am considering putting turbo cup3 alloys (like on 993) on my 944 Lux 1988. They are replica wheels and from a company called Inovite (don't know if had any reports on their wheels but are very reasonable compared to other porsche dedicated retailers).

Is there anything I have to be aware of if I go to the bigger 18" size? What are the drawbacks of a the bigger alloy (compared to a 17").
Would appreciate any advice.

You need to fit the later 968 style caster mounts when fitting larger than 16" wheels, all the details are here:

Although 18" are forbidden by Porsche there are many people using them and indeed Techart have even had a version of their 18" wheels specifically TUV approved for 944. If it gets through a TUV test then it will get through any saftey test.
 
Sorry not be of much any help, but I'm interested to see peoples opinions on this.

I've just ordered a set of 18" wheels for my '91 turbo. I wanted 17's for the better handling over the 18's, but there weren't any I really wanted. So thought I go for the 18's I had my heart set on and keep the 16" design 90's for track days.

Hopefully I can let you know how the 18's go in a few days.
 
I ran 18's on 3 different 944s for probably close to 80,000 miles. They look the mutt's (if you get the right style and size), but the car is over tyred with them on and on the cab in particular they ruined the drive.

You absolutely need the 968 castor mounts or it will tramline for a pastime and otherwise generally make sure the suspension is in good condition and get the alignment checked/adjusted with the 18's on the car.

Thanks for the info. A lot more complex than it initially looks. Serious consiquences if get it wrong.

No one has mentioned 968 style castor mounts so far. What are they, where do they go, are they easy to put one, where to get them from, how much do they cost.

I presume from your reply a 968 syle castor mount is required for both 18" and also 17".

Pardon my ignorance but what is a TUV.

The type of alloys I want to put on are called different names by different suppliers but some of them call them call them Cup3 Turbo, Turbo look II, Cup 3. but they are "dog legged" in appearance.

968 castor mounts are about £40 each from an OPC - use Exeter (01392 822800) and tell Chris you're from "the forum" for a bit of discount if you don't have a pet one yet.

They attach the back of the wishbone to the chassis and allow for adjustment of the castor angle by means of an eccentric bolt. They are easy to change but you need to be careful not to move the adjustment.
 
I am currently driving on 18inch turbo cups on a completely standard set up.With Pilot sports all round, I have no problem with tracking. With the Pirelli's that the wheels came with second hand, the steering wandered all over the place like a mad woman's excement.

The only problem i have had was that the wheel arches need to be fully rolled to accommodate the 265/30 rears. The 285 rears are far too wide and will foul the passenger side wheel arch to the point of damaging the body and destroying the tyre. (thank you Mr Porsche Specialist, so much for expert knowledge).

If you are apt to getting airbourne you may still connect the inside wheel arch though if you go for 10' rears with 265 width tyres.(Which may be the least of your worries. actually).
 
It's still on the car, yes. It actually belongs to a mate who deals in cherished numbers.
 
i have 265 tyres on the rear of my 944s and have not had to roll the arches to accomodate.

love the look of the 18s on the car they just make it a lot more modern looking ;)
