17 x 235 Dunlop slicks

You should also have seen Steve Rance's comments on using slicks. Only last the length of a race before going off. MPCs last much longer

My advice is do not try and save money on tyres. They are the only thing keeping you on track.

I am speaking from experience of trying used slicks!

I think Steves comments were more relevant to race teams who need a tyre to be at 100% of it's game or it's useless.

I bought two sets of new slicks from the supplier for the Porsche Cup at the end of season back in 2000. The rears lasted over 20 (yes twenty) trackdays over the next few years, and I only chucked them away because cracks started to appear in the sidewall. They would be useless for a racer by that time, but they still had bags more grip than any road or track tyre I've ever tried. At only £55 each they were an absolute bargain [:)]

Steve was comparing lap times between slicks and MPCs. The MPCs lasted a lot longer and times were more consistent although not ultimately as quick.

His view was for track day use MPCs were the best option. You cqn also drive to the track on them.

If racing you use new slicks. If track daying you can get alot of days out of a set of NEW slicks.

The question here was do you buy a set of unknown used slicks for track days. The answer from experience is NO.

Cheers Paul for the "heads up"..
BUT im not a big fan of using slicks on track days..
Some companies dont let you on with slicks...
Also ive found that when using them, the grip levels are that much higher + when they do loose grip, it can be very "snappy"...
Personally. I prefure the Dunlop D01j tyre, OR the DZ03G as it is now....They seem to be quite forgiving, with a good level of grip...
NOT a fan of the MPC,s, i find they can "go off" when realy pushing them....But they are fairly long lasting, .....I got about 8 t days from a set of part worns. [ bought with 4mm left]....

I like to see a convert Dave [;)]...although those new MPC's were VERY grippy weren't they Paul......compared to those15 year old tyres which scared the living daylights out of me, and i just wish i had known about those wet lines around Silverstone then.

Not tried slicks, but do suspect they offer far too much grip for recreational trackdays, 235/265 D01J/DZ02's offer all the grip i need. Perhaps place too much strain on the car also with prolonged use.
