18" and 16" wheels - interchangeable?

I currently have 18" carerra wheels on an '03 boxster - as was the original spec from new. I would like to attend more track days, but find that scuffing the 18" rubber very expensive. I was considering buying a 2nd hand set of 16" boxster wheels, which can be picked up fairly cheaply, simply for tracking the car.

Does anyone know if there are any issues with simply swapping over the wheels when needed? I'm not really bothered about speedo reading issues etc, just whether the car will be driveable on track? I am aware I will get a different feel from the 16" wheels, but am quite willing to work with that.

Sorry Mark, just looking for other opinions, you did say "should" be ok, was kind of looking for a more definitive answer[;)]

I just phoned the OPC to ask the same question and they said they don't recommend changing down wheel sizes as it can effect the ABS and PSM. I'm not convinced by this....is there a phone number of someone technical at Porsche GB I could ask?

Hmmm.

I did reply earlier - but my PC was playing up and the post didn't "take".

Here's the gist of it:

The 2.5 and 2.7 come as standard with 16" wheels (take a look at Porsches own website).

PSM and ABS should not be affected... How?

(By the way, you need 17" wheels minimum for the S because of the bigger discs)

Thanks Mark, yes I'm not convinced about the argument that it'll affect the PSM and ABS, because otherwise Porsche wouldn't sell the 18" wheels to 16" customers after-market, otherwise their PSM and ABS would be incorrect also.

I'm going to phone a few other OPCs until I get the answer I want [;)]

The OPC comment about confusing the PSM and ABS is very suspect from professional people who should know these cars. When you increase the size of wheel you decrease the tyre wall profile so that the overall tyre circumference is the same (and vice-versa when decreasing the wheel), so The ABS and PSM will be measuring the exact same parameters.

Marks comment about needing 17" wheels to clear the bigger callipers seems to be the valid point here.

I was at the Glasgow PCGB meet last night and the more technical minded of them thought this was a hilarious comment from an OPC. They questioned if the OPC would refuse to sell the tequipment 18" wheels to a 16" owner, as surely the same principal applies.

So, phoned another OPC (aberdeen) - said that of course there was no problem, otherwise they wouldn't sell the boxster with 16s....got the answer I wanted, so happy now![:D]
