18 inch cup 3 alloy fitment on a 91 turbo

turbocabrio

New member
I was offered a set of 18 inch cup 3 alloys. they are 8.5 inch offset 52 fronts and 10 inch offset 47 rears. tyres are 225 x 40 front and 265 x 35 rear.Will these fit a 91 944 turbo without spacers.

I think they are fine from memory, but if you are omitting "cabrio" when you say '91 944 Turbo then I'd suggest you don't. I had that size of wheels/tyres on my '91 S2 cabrio and while it looked pretty good it destroyed the car, and a Turbo with stiffer springs and dampers will only be worse.

On one particular corner I vivdly remember missing my intended clipping point by something like 3 feet because the chassis shook so much over some unevenness. Back on 16" wheels it was fine on the same corner. Compromise on 17" would be my advice if you really don't want to stick with the 16s.

Thanks Fen,
I have to clear up a point you made about the cabrio bit. I do infact have 2 944 turbos. A 91 coupe and a 92 cabrio.im currently running 17s on both but like the look of the 18s. I wouldnt dream of putting them on the cab due to the lack of body rigity, but would like to try them on the coupe. thanks for the advice .cheers.

If you do go ahead and fit the 18s, I would recommend also fitting the 968 front castor mounts for the front suspension arms - they contain much less rubber than the now obsolete 944 ones and really made a difference to the front end on my car on 18s. That might have just been because my old mounts were tired though....[:)]

The offsets on mine are 54 & 45, so yours sound OK.

Hi Paul,

It does say this in your signature, but the signature isn't included in the posts! Click the "Always attach signature in posts" box in your profile and it'll show in all your posts.

To everyone - it's shows how much easier it is if everyone shows the model they've got and a vague location in their profile! [:)]

Technically it will still over-tyre the coupe but it will not have the same adverse effects that it would on the cab. I ran my 18's for well in excess of 100,000 miles across 2 coupes and a little bit on my cab and it was only the cab I took them off because of the way it made the car drive.

I had 10 inch and et47 on the rear and all was fine until I fitted new tyres. These were exactly the same tyre, but about 6 years younger, and then I had rubbing issues on the nearside rear. My car is on M030 but not especially low?

Thanks for the replys lads.forgot to mention that the car does not have the M030 adjustable suspension, and the car is totally stock.Sounds like ill be getting those 18s after all.cheers .

Hmm, I have 10" rears with et of 60mm. I would think that you'd be getting close to rubbing, however perhaps with 265's you could be ok. The problem is that you would be the reverse of needing spacers ie you can't fix it if they don't work. Is there anyway you could go there and trial fit them?

Did you get them? feedback?

NB I had similar wheels on my roadgoing 968 -- as mentioned above the main issue will be the possibility of rubbing the rear wings a bit -- will prob depend on how much -ve camber your are running. A figure closer to 2 degrees than 1 might be enough to stop it rubbing.
