18 inch rims on a Targa

Hi,

I'm new to Porsche ownership and also to these forums, so thanks in anticipation for the support!

I have a 1996 993 Targa and have purchased a set of 18 inch Turbo Twist alloys, model numbers 993.362.134.06 fronts and 993.362.140.04 rears, which I believe are (7.5x18, ET50) and (10x18, ET65) respectively. Can someone recommend the perfect tyre size and whether I need to use spacers or not? [I think the tyre size should be 225/40/ZR18 and 265/35/ZR18 from what I can gather from the forums]

I realise that the current rims look great and authentic but I love the Twists and I'll keep the originals for when I inevitably change my mind!

If there is a thread that gives the specific answer on this one, then I can't find it!

Thanks!

You may be interested in Porsche Technical bulletin number 9604. (see this link also http://p-car.com/technical/wheel.htm )

I am not aware that any up-dated bulletin was issued to the contrary but someone else out there may know better. Just thought I'd let you know.

Steve

Probably not now, Steve, as all our cars are out of (Porsche) warranty - but I would suggest that (having looked at the articles you kindly citied), apart from making the Targa "˜creak' a little more(!), the upgrade could be used on it, as the Targa is derived from a Cabriolet after all (Cab + roof section = Targa).

Just my thought on this, not definitive.

Thanks Gents. I read somewhere that they recommended not to use 18's on the targa as it had the potential to cause the targa motors to cease because of the extra vibrations. I suppose its a chance you take! I'll see if I get any more feedback before taking the plunge!

Thought all this stuff re targa's and 18" wheels was to do with a steering rack mod, which had to be carried out, but was standard on all post '96 cars, or am I getting my wires crossed?

The reason Porsche advised against fitting 18 inch wheels to the Targa was not to do with the steering rack mod as Targas will already have it being 96 onwards cars. It is to do with the extra stiffness in the tire sidewalls and the possible detrimental effect on the Targa roof mechanism.

Which I believe is why there is not the same restriction on cabriolets.

Ian.

Point taken, Ian - so everything rattles on the roof a bit more then, I see.
In that case, probably better not to fit the 18 inchers on a Targa.

Which is also why I prefer my tin top[;)]

wires were crossed, but at least I remembered there was something in the deep depths of time[;)]

I know someone who had the panoramic roof (glass) shatter on a mercedes C class coupe, makes quite a mess.....

If you like the turbo twists so much, try getting hold of a set of the 17" versions (not sure if they are Porsche or replica).

Its a fair point Steve, I'll have a look into them. Trouble is they dont quite have the same look. Do you know if they are wider than the targa wheels?
