18 inches wheels on a 993 Targa

Despite the sound advice elsewhere (sorry Maurice) I'm kinda tempted to fit 18's to my Targa. So what am I risking? Anecdotally I haven't heard of anyone or seen any posts from anyone who's had a problem with their 18 inch shod Targa, so does anyone have some suitable scare storeies to put me off before I do something stupid?

Cheers

Guess Porsche were worried that the extra flexing caused in the body might cause long term damage to the targa top. This is the only thing I can think of and as a previous targa owner I can see where they were coming from. They, as a manufacturer, would have to play safe making recommendations.

I doubt you'll get a black and white answer to this.

Ian.

10 years later, any actual reported incidents

and a fair few owners have fun 18's with no problems

I posed the same question in the 911UK forum a while ago as I was tempted to replace the OEM Targa wheels with some 18" Carrera five spoke alloys. I didn't get a definitive answer but there was one guy who had been running 18"s on his Targa (Veloces, I think) for quite some time without problems. The ride is a bit firmer, but I guess that's always going to be the case in moving up to bigger wheels.

In the event, the cost of replacing wheels is money I can't justify at the moment - and the OEM Targa wheels are growing on me (slowly!) so I'll let someone else blaze that particular trail!

Thanks everybody for your responses.

Should I go for it? I've never actually seen anyone even say they heard of someone else who had a problem after fitting 18's. I hope it's just Porsche being really cautious with their advice. I don't track the car (yet!) so I could use the original 17's when I do, and my mileage is low (just clocked 50K, doing about 5K a year) but I just hope the ride compromise is worth it and that I don't open a can of worms with the handling/tramlining etc. What about the guys with cabriolets running 18's? Do they get on OK with them?

I assume it'll be a good idea to fit that steering rack brace Maurice?

Cheers
